Folks,
Just sharing some pics.

Another Ghanaian Road Made in China but built with American money opens in Accra.

I witnessed the reopening of the first completed Chinese section. The Chinese have done a brilliant  and impressive job.No wonder they are  now winning all the Civil Engineering and all the other  construction contracts in Ghana and  Africa.

The N1 Highway links the busy Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to Mallam to the West of Accra as part of the West African Highway  Transportation Project.

The question is where are the Ghanaian or African Contrators in the grand scheme of things (development) one may ask ?

Well another Ghanaian Road made in China.

Regards

Stephen,

The pictures look nice.
Personally, I don't care whether the road is built by Chinese, Koreans or Americans or whoever as long as they do a good job for the money they are paid. Why give the job to a local contractor who will take the money, do a shoddy job, and never finish the job?

The question is, with our culture of "zero maintenance" what will this road look like in a few years?

Mike

Steve,

This is very impressive!!

“Ghanaian Road Made in China but built with American money opens in Accra.”

How many miles of road is it, approximately? I guess 20 miles? Some areas seem 3-4 lanes in each direction and of course Chinese learned for America and the width of the roads are not Ghana design specifications.

Americans don’t like giving money to have Chinese do the work, but I guess with history, they have no strong foreign policy on that aspect as they should. Ideally it should not mater except for political implications. I think China is actually financing their own projects now.

I am going to work on recommending that American money should go with projects and expertise. Americans companies could have completed the 20 miles of highways in 6-12 months, instead of 4-6 years of agony and pain as Ghanaians have gone through!! I am mad at the leadership that gives contracts without a firm date of completion. I blame both Rawlings, Kufuor and Mills in the post PNDC coup screwed up era.

Well, either way, this is beautiful!! Mills will get some good brownie points for the elections.

There are four things that elections should be based on:

Kwaku Azar called it WET – Water, Electricity and Toilets.

I modify and upgrade it to WERTT – Water, Electricity, Roads (&Highways)  and Toilets (sewage systems) and Telephones.

Whoever remembers these and does well on them wins!!

People seem satisfied better on their Telephone area, due to cell phones now, even though land line and Broadband telecommunication systems are behind.

Well, who knows Mills may pull one out of the hat.

Doc,
You are right the design and specifications had a lot of imput from Project Engineers and consultants employed by the United States Government through the Millenium Development Authority which was funded by American Tax Payers monies. So I don't think Agya Atta can take any credit for the roads efficient and brilliant construction bar these footbridges wahala.

Infact every thing about this road, the most busiest traffic thoroughfare in the whole of Ghana was conceived during the estwhile NPP Kuffuor Administration when President George W Bush visited Ghana.

President Kuffuor even proposed to name it The George Bush International Highway, but this Government has opposed it I understand.

In Ghanaian Construction, Contracts and project management terms, everything about this road especially the project management , financing and the transperancy in contract execution has just been brilliant and this has been done with very relatively minimal Ghana Government involvement.

No money physically went through Ghana Government hands so there was NO STEALING OF CONTRACT MONIES.

Ghana Government should really learn how its done from this project, because all the documents , Inspection Reports, from inception to completion, how much contractors and project Engineers were paid has all been published by the US Government.

Even US Congressmen and Women visited on a regular basis to check the progress of work because it was AMERICAN TAX PAYERS MONIES to make sure the right things are done.

Unlike our politicians and leaders
They k new it was their responsibility to SAFEGAURD public money.

Incidentally there is a similar road , the beach road from La Palm Hotel to the Kofi Annan Centre in Accra, was started way before this Road. It was awarded to a Ghanaian Contractor Big Aidoo Construction in 2008.

Guess what its been abandoned with ONLY one dual lane half completed.
Its been alleged by some one I know who worked on it, half the contract money HAS BEEN STOLEN.

Hhhhhmmmmnnn This Ghana Town, who is in charge???

Ghana Goverment Operatives should really learn a cue from the efficient way the US Government executed this project and use it as Good pratice for all Government funded construction projects.

Good morning.

Who said we are always the bearers of bad news??

Regards

S Nyako
