I've recently accepted responsibility to oversee maintenance for two buildings assembled from kits produced by Oregon Dome Inc. in 1986 and 1995. I understand this company is no longer in operation.

Would appreciate referrals to dome experts available who can help us inspect and contract for appropriate structural repairs. Buildings are located in Irvine, CA.

Regards,

Paul Strasma

Paul,
Many of the companies that manufacture and/or sell domes will do consulting, inspection and even repairs.  The question arises as to whether or not you need someone who is licensed in that location as a contractor or otherwise licensed/certified engineer.  Often you will get better information from a dome specialist who really knows the craft, even if they don't have licenses and certifications. If you have them issue a report, it can always be turned over to those who would be responsible for the final design, proposal, repairs, etc.  I've actually had several dome company owners tell me stories of the times they were hired to do just what you are asking, even for domes that were not theirs, and in fact had to guide the contractors and engineers who were conducting the work.  Too often they would have done it wrong had they not had the participation of a dome specialist.  If nothing else, you can run the proposal/plans from the licensed people past the dome specialist as a review, just in a consulting capacity.  With any luck, they will help you prevent a train wreck, or save you some money/time with suggestions that would otherwise been overlooked.

Geez, I didn't know you worked with Oregon Dome.  I went to a few of their dome raisings. I'm curious, in what capacity did you work with them?  Seemed like Linda Boothe ran the operation, but it was her husband (Roger? I think) who ran the shop and did the construction.  I met him at one of the raisings and had quite a bit of discussion.

I assisted Roger and Linda in an Oregon Dome  conference in No. Virginia in the 80's. I have poured over Roger's dome construction manual. I became an authorized dealer. I assisted Roger in erecting a 50-ft diameter dome in the 90's. I built one to his specs in the 00's:

Paul,
So that makes you one of our valued walking history books, along with all your other contributions.

I've not yet seen a copy of Roger's Dome Construction manual, but have a pretty extensive dome library.  Do you think it has useful information that you don't find elsewhere or in more recent work?  Roger did describe to me how he cut his struts, and I had never heard of anyone else doing it that way.  Not sure if it was or was not better than other methods, but was interesting.

Hi Dan,
Here's a 2012 thread about panel-dome construction methods including the one used by Oregon Domes. Paul Robinson, who used to post here and who is well known for his construction plans and YouTube videos about small backyard domes, uses a method very similar to that of Oregon Domes. Several years ago I built a small tool shed using that method.

Gerry,
Thanks for the lead.  I will post here a few related items that may be of interest to those who had not seen these earlier.  There is some discussion of this specific topic.

Since I have not reviewed the Oregon Dome manual by Roger, I was just wondering what it had for content.  I figured he probably covered strut cutting.  Always looking for useful things I did not already know...and in many cases, didn't even know enough to ask about.

Hi Dx G and Paul(s),
Thanks for the links. Here's an old Oregon Dome, Inc. brochure that may be of interest to you .... though I suspect some of you already have a copy. Also, I've attached an image showing the locations of compound angle cuts and simple bevel cuts of the strut ends in Oregon Dome panels.
Cheers,
