Strategies for Addressing Planetary Crises

7th RISD Design Science Symposium 2024
Friday, September 27th - Saturday, September 28th, 2024
Rhode Island School of Design, Providence RI

** DEADLINE: May 15th, 2024 **

In 1972, as humanity collectively gazed at Apollo 17’s image of Earth, now known as the Blue Marble, we became united with the understanding that the finite spherical surface we inhabited was simultaneously bountiful and fragile. Yet the industriousness of our species has continued to alter the air, sea and landscape of our inherited planet, and we are at the precipice of irrevocable damage.

Design, a very human endeavor, has bestowed upon us the ability to make change with intent. Science has enlightened us with the mechanics inherent in the complexity of nature. Design Science shows us that at the very fundamental level, beauty and coherence underpin the phenomena that coordinates our universe, and that every person can make change in service to nature and humanity. As Earth transforms in front of our eyes, can our society make holistic and systemic change?

As Design Scientists, we will congregate to share ideas for making this change possible. We reflect on the latest findings of the 5th National Climate Assessment and COP28 to anchor ourselves to the state of the present and anticipate the challenges ahead. Should we be inspired by the capacity of humans to develop technology in the face of adversity? Can we work with nature to support her methods of dynamic regeneration? What is the role of art and design in this work? Can we laugh, sing and imbue joy in the process? We are convening to create new opportunities for collaboration, and to discuss solutions that are transdisciplinary, inclusive and comprehensive.

Example of serendipity or synchronicity!  WOW!

The other day, I came across this more generalized reference:

And, with the way my brain works, I started thinking about things falling on my head (from the sky above):

Enjoy!

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not.

I was being serious!

One of the side projects that I want to achieve is to write a science-fiction novel, and I was looking at those things.

cool

I'm thinking I can at least do some small things to make life better for the planet (but not stop an asteroid!)

Joe Clinton sent that invite. He and friend are making the RISD thing happen again now that CJK is gone. I won't present but I will attend. I've been to several in the last century.
