DEATHS.

 

On Wednesday morning last, at the house of his brother-in-law, Mr. John WHARTON, Spread Eagle Inn, in this city, aged 45, whither he had returned for the recovery of his health, Mr. Geo. JOHNSTON, master gunner, King's-town Forts, near Dublin, to which situation he was appointed about ten months ago; prior to which appointment he resided in Carlisle for several years, respected by a numerous acquaintance.

 

Since our last—Margaret ELLIOT, Blackhall, aged 23. Thomas HENDERSON, Caldewgate, aged 81.

 

At Penrith, on Saturday last, Thomas, son of Mr. Robert LAMB, butcher, Dockray, Penrith, aged 16.

 

At Cockermouth, Mr. Robert THURSBY, aged 78. He was many years a Sheriff's-officer, and bore an excellent character.

 

At Workington, on Tuesday last, at an advanced age, Wm. SWINBURNE, Esq. head Steward to J. C. CURWEN, Esq. M. P. He has left a widow and twelve children.

 

At Warble Bank, Westward, on Monday last, after a tedious illness, John, third son of the late Mr. Robert BARNES, of Sebergham-Hall, aged 17 years.

 

At Workington, on the 9th, Mr. John BROCKBANK, in the 78th year of his age. He was the father of the Methodist Society in that town, and the founder of the chapel belonging to that religious body, of which he was an exemplary member for 56 years; though, according to the advice of the venerable WESLEY, he maintained a strict attendance upon, and constant communion with, the Established Church.

 

On Saturday last, at Flimby Lodge, near Maryport, Miss Helen CRAIK, in the 74th year of her age. She was a lady of very considerable literary talents; and, we understand, was the authoress of several works both in French and English, which were published anonymously. The benevolence of her disposition was unbounded; she was the protector of the orphan, the friend of the friendless. The poor in her neighbourhood will long lament her loss, for she had a heart 'open as day to melting charity,' and a hand ever ready to succour them in all their wants. Miss CRAIK was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. CRAIK, Arbigland, in Galloway.

 

At Millyeat, near Whitehaven, Esther, the wife of Mr. Wm. DIXON, bacon merchant, aged 48.

 

In Queen-street, Whitehaven, Betty, wife of Mr. William HELLONS, hatter, aged 58.

 

At New York, on the 4th of March, Mr. Isaac LONG, aged 48, brother of Mr. Jackson LONG, cooper, of Whitehaven.

 

Suddenly, in Kendal, Mr. Samuel Edmondson GREENHOW, jun. aged 22.

 

In London, of a consumption, Eleanor, wife of Mr. George HOGARTH, saddler, late of Kendal.

 

At Ambleside, on the 4th, Mrs. Ann FORREST, 83.

 

Lately, at Beethom, Mrs. HODGSON, of the Wheat Sheaf Inn.

 

At Appleby, on Monday last, William HOLMES, Esq. of Crosbyravensworth, senior Captain of the Royal Westmorland Militia; much regretted by his brother officers and all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.

 

At Kirkby Stephen, on the 9th inst. Mrs. Mary POWLEY, shopkeeper, aged 48.

 

On Tuesday week, at Cheltenham, in his 67th year, Sir John Benn WALSH, Bart. of Warfield, in the county of Berks, and of Ormathwaite, Cumberland. Sir John was a native of Whitehaven.

 

At Dumfries, on the 12th instant, aged 16 years, Miss Margaret YOUNG, third daughter of the late Mr. Alexander YOUNG, supervisor of excise in Dumfries.

 

At Caldronlee, parish of Kirkpatrick-Fleming, on the 10th instant, Mr. David HILL, in his 62nd year.

 

The Rev. Abraham REES, D. D., F. R. S. Editor of the Cyclopædia, &c. &c., died at his house in Artillery-Place, Finsbury-square, on Thursday the 9h inst. He was in the 82nd year of his age.

 

At Glenzier-foot, parish of Cannobie, Mr. William MURRAY, farmer, at an advanced age.

 

At his rectory of Partenhall, Bedfordshire, in his 90th year, the Rev. Thomas MARTYN, B. D. F. R. S. Regius Professor of Botany in the University of Cambridge for the long period of 64 years.
