FRIENDLY SOCIETY
ESTABLISHED for ESKDALE WARD.
AT a Meeting of the MAGISTRATES, GENTLEMEN, and INHABITANTS of the Hundred of ESKDALE WARD, in the County of Cumberland, held at the COURT-HOUSE, BRAMPTON, on FRIDAY the 7th Day of OCTOBER, 1825, pursuant to Public Notice in the Carlisle Newspapers,
HENRY HOWARD, Esq. in the Chair.
IT WAS RESOLVED UNANIMOUSLY,
That a FRIENDLY INSTITUTION be Established at BRAMPTON, for the Hundred of ESKDALE WARD, to raise by Subscription among the Members thereof, or by voluntary Contributions, a Fund for the mutual Relief and Maintenance of the Members thereof in Infancy, Old Age, Sickness, and Infirmity, so as to afford further facilities and additional security to Persons who may be willing to unite in appropriating small sums from time to time to the formation of a Common Fund for the purposes aforesaid, upon such conditions as may protect the Contributors against the effects of fraud, or miscalculation, and against the great abuses which have prevailed in many Societies established under the Statutes in that case made.
That the Rules, Regulations, and Tables of Contributions and Allowances drawn up and produced at this Meeting be adopted as the Rules of the said FRIENDLY INSTITUTION; that they be submitted to the consideration of WILLIAM MORGAN, Esq. Actuary of the Equitable Assurance Office, and WILLIAM FREND, Esq. Actuary of the Rock Assurance Office, London, and that when examined and approved by them, application be made by Memorial, signed by three of the Trustees of the Society, to the Justices assembled at the next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace, in and for the County of Cumberland, for the confirmation and approval of the Rules of the said Institution, and of the Tables of Payments and Allowances therein, to the intent that the same, if so confirmed, may be deposited and enrolled with the Clerk of the Peace of the said County, pursuant to the Statutes in that case made and provided.
That the cordial Thanks of this Meeting be given to the RIGHT HONOURABLE the EARL OF CARLISLE, for his kindness in having expressed his Pleasure to become Patron of this Institution.
That the following Noblemen and Gentlemen be and are hereby nominated and appointed the Trustees and Directors of the said Institution, viz.

That this Meeting be adjourned to the MAGISTRATES' OFFICE, in BRAMPTON, until the 16th Day of NOVEMBER next, for the purpose of then commencing the Business of the said Institution, and electing the Stewards of the said Society, and that a Book be in the mean time opened to receive the Names and Subscriptions of Honorary Members, and of the Names of such Persons as propose to become Ordinary Members.
That the Thanks of this Meeting be given to WILLIAM PONSONBY JOHNSON, Esq. for his exertions in promoting the Establishment of this Institution.
That these Resolutions be Published in the Carlisle Newspapers, and printed Copies thereof circulated throughout Eskdale Ward.
