We understand that the Bishop of Chester requires every stipendiary curate, who intends to quit the curacy to which he is licensed for the purpose of taking another, to give the Bishop three months' notice of his intention; and, in default of such notice, the Bishop will not license the person neglecting to give it to any curacy within his diocese, nor countersign his testimonials to the Bishop of any other diocese, unless a sufficient cause can be shown for the omission. The Bishop wishes to direct the attention of the curates of non-resident incumbents, to the following section of the act of 57th Geo. 3. c. 29, sec. 68:—"And be it further enacted, that no curate shall quit any benefice to which he shall be licensed until after three months' notice of his intention to quit, given to the person holding such benefice, and to the Bishop of the diocese, unless with the consent of the Bishop of the diocese, upon pain of forfeiting to the spiritual person holding the benefice a sum not exceeding the amount of his stipend for six months, at the discretion of the Bishop; which sum may, in such case, be retained out of the stipend if the same, or any part thereof, shall remain unpaid; or, if the same cannot be retained out of the stipend, may be recovered by the spiritual person holding the benefice, as any penalty or forfeiture under this act may be recovered."—Cumberland Pacquet.
