CALENDAR

 

Of the Prisoners in the Gaol and House of Correction at Carlisle, at the General Quarter Sessions of the Peace, to be holden at Cockermouth, on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 1826:—

 

John WARWICK, aged 29, Samuel BIRD, aged 19; committed, Nov. 16, 1825, by William HEBSON, Esq. charged with having on the night of the 13th inst. feloniously stolen and carried away from the premises of Ephraim PEAT, situate at Mount Pleasant, in the parish of Dacre, one cock and eight hens, his property.

 

William SIMPSON, aged 25; committed, Nov. 25, 1825, by Wm. HEBSON, Esq. charged upon his own confession with having, along with John WARWICK and Samuel BIRD, feloniously stolen and carried away from the premises of Ephraim PEAT, at Mount Pleasant, in the parish of Dacre, one cock and eight hens.

 

Thomas NICHOL, aged 34; committed, Dec. 3, 1825, by the Rev. Walter FLETCHER, charged upon the oath of Wm. Nicholson HODGSON, of Carlisle, gentleman, with having fraudulently embezzled and made away with two pounds and eight shillings, which he had received for and on account of the said W. N. HODGSON, contrary to the form of the statute, &c.

 

Prisoners in custody on their several former orders:

 

James PERCIVAL, convicted at the summer assizes, 1821, and ordered to be transported for seven years.

 

William HASTY, convicted at the Michaelmas sessions, 1824, and ordered to be transported for seven years.

 

Ann IRVING, convicted at the Epiphany sessions, 1824, and ordered to be transported for seven years.

 

William CRAMPTON, Isaac MAWSON, John MOOR, severally convicted at the Summer assizes, 1824, and ordered and adjudged to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for the respective terms following: that is to say, Wm. CRAMPTON and Isaac MAWSON for three years, and John MOOR for two years.

 

William RENNIE, capitally convicted at the Lent assizes, 1825, and judgment of death recorded against him; since reprieved, and adjudged to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for the term of one year.

 

Nathaniel PEARCE, convicted at the Lent assizes, 1825, and adjudged to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for the term of one year.

 

Peter GRUNDY, Lucy CURTIS, Susan M'LAUGHLEN, severally convicted at the general quarter sessions of the peace, holden April 12, 1825, and adjudged to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for one year.

 

Sarah DRAPER, convicted at the City sessions, holden July 11, 1825, and adjudged to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for twelve months.

 

William SMITH, Thomas TINDAL, Jane TAYLOR, Anne BURNS, severally convicted at the general quarter sessions of the peace, holden July 12, 1825, and adjudged to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for 12 months.

 

Isabella RICHARDSON, committed July 30, 1825, by J. HEYSHAM, Esq. for an offence against the excise laws.

 

Hannah WELLS, tried at the summer assizes, 1825, and acquitted by the jury, on the ground of insanity, and ordered to be kept in strict custody until his Majesty's pleasure should be known.

 

Sarah HIGGINS, committed Aug. 26, 1825, by the Rev. Thos. LOWRY, D. D. and John HEYSHAM, Esq. convicted of having been delivered of a male bastard child, which is yet living, and chargeable to the township of Caldewgate, in the parish of St. Mary, Carlisle, to be imprisoned and set to work for six months.

 

Elizabeth FERGUSON, committed Sept. 29, 1825, by Thos. SCOTT and Wm. HEBSON, Esqrs. convicted of having been delivered of a male bastard child, which is yet living, and chargeable to the parish of Penrith, to be imprisoned and set to work for the space of four calendar months.

 

John MAHON, committed Sept. 29, 1825, charged upon the coroner's inquest with the wilful murder of William BELL, of Carlisle, grocer.

 

Christopher INGLEBY, Thomas DORRENS, George WILLIAMSON, James M'DONALD, severally convicted at the City sessions, holden Oct. 17, 1825, and adjudged to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for the respective terms following: that is to say, C. INGLEBY and T. DORRENS for twelve months, and G. WILLIAMSON and J. M'DONALD for six months.

 

James CLARK, convicted at the general quarter sessions of the peace, holden Oct. 18, 1825, and adjudged to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for six months.

 

Jonathan NICHOLSON, committed Oct. 21, 1825, by E. W. HASELL, Esq. convicted of poaching in the parish of Greystoke, to be imprisoned three months.

 

Patrick M'VEAY, committed Oct. 29, 1825, by the Rev. Walter FLETCHER, charged with having feloniously put away and disposed of a certain forged note, purporting to be a cash note for the payment of one pound and one shilling of the Royal Bank of Scotland, well knowing the same to be forged and counterfeit.

 

Jane DIXON, committed November 1, 1825, by John HEYSHAM, Esq. convicted of running away from the workhouse of the parish of St. Cuthbert, Carlisle, and carrying away with her divers articles, the property of the overseers of the poor of the said parish, to be imprisoned three calendar months.

 

Ann GRAHAM, Jane WILLIAMSON, committed Nov. 4, 1825, by Wm. HODGSON, Esq. Mayor, charged upon the oath of Edward M'CORMICK, of the City of Carlisle, labourer, with feloniously stealing from his person several cash notes, and a quantity of shillings and sixpences.

 

William MOOR, committed Nov. 19, 1825, by the Rev. Walter FLETCHER, charged with having feloniously uttered and put away to Archibald SCOTT, of the City of Carlisle, banker, a certain bill of Exchange, bearing date the 16th day of May last, and drawn by the said W. MOOR upon Messrs. SCOTT and BRAGG, 26, Bucklersbury, payable two months after date to the order of John LAWSON for two hundred pounds, and indorsed "John LAWSON," which indorsement is forged and counterfeit, and which the said W. MOOR well knew.

 

Hannah BLAIKLEY, committed Nov. 19, 1825, by Wm. HODGSON, Esq. Mayor, charged with having unlawfully and deceitfully uttered one piece of false money, made and counterfeited to the likeness and similitude of a half-crown, well knowing the same to be so.

 

George HETHERINGTON, committed Dec. 7, 1825, by Wm. HODGSON, Esq. for refusing to perform an order of filiation, by paying nine pounds and four shillings due to the parish of St. Mary, Carlisle, to be imprisoned three months, unless, &c.

 

David DIXON, committed Dec. 11, 1825, by John HEYSHAM, Esq. for an offence against the excise laws.

 

Henry GRAHAM, committed Dec. 13, 1825, by Humphrey SENHOUSE, Esq. and Edward FAWCETT, Clerk, for refusing to pay the penalty of five pounds, for an offence against the excise laws.

 

Mary GREENWOOD, committed Dec. 17, 1825, by William HODGSON, Esq. convicted of being a rogue and vagabond, to be imprisoned one month.

 

William JOHNSON, committed, Dec. 30, 1825, by Wm. Ponsonby JOHNSON, Esq. for refusing to pay the penalty of five pound, for an offence against the game laws, to be imprisoned three months.

 

Mary IRVING, committed Dec. 28, 1825, by John HEYSHAM, Esq. charged upon the oath of James REED and others, with feloniously stealing in the parish of St. Cuthbert, in the city of Carlisle, a bundle containing divers articles, of the value of ten shillings.

 

John DONALLY, committed Jan. 2, 1826, by William HODGSON, Esq. charged with feloniously stealing and carrying away a bundle, containing divers articles of wearing apparel, the property of Thomas HAMILTON, of Carlisle, gentleman.

 

Number of prisoners contained in the above calendar 45; number of debtors in custody 24; total number in custody 69. Number of commitments in the Christmas Quarter ending January Sessions, 1826, 63.
