Gay marriage controversy causes wedding certificate furor

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (AP) - Social Security Administration officials have begun
to reject marriage documents from New Paltz that were issued after Feb. 27,
when the village's mayor, Jason West, started performing wedding ceremonies
for gay couples.
The policy is part of a document called "Evidence of Identity for an SSN
Card," which dictates what documents can be used to obtain a Social Security
Card. But the agency stopped recognizing marriage certificates in New Paltz
for that purpose after the February date. The agency says in the policy that
the legality of the documents is "unresolved at the state level."
