Where I live I only have access to some lakes on rugged back-country
roads. So I use a mountain-bike to get to them. All's fine and well,
but there's some places I really would like to take a boat. I checked
into getting a canoe trailer to haul my canoe behind my (pedal) bike,
but at 17ft., 60+ lbs., I didn't think I could handle that ungainly
volume/mass behind the bike. And the only bike-trailers I could find
didn't fit a canoe that size.
So back to the cool canoe I found. It uses origami-like folding to
collapse a 10 ft. canoe down into a 48"x14"x4" pack. Now *that* is
manageable on a bike, and only at 32 lbs too. So, that's my spring
project. Outfitting my bike with this cool collapsible canoe. I don't
know if I'll be able to fit the bike in the canoe, but I'm going to see
if there's a way. Then there is no limit to where I could go with the
combo. Put the bike in the canoe when having to traverse waters, strap
the (folded up) canoe to the bike when having to traverse lands.
I'll probably do a nice photo-journal post of this project on my Gay
Outdoorsmen forums, where I already started a thread about it (just me
there so far, and 4 hetero hunters that are trying to help out). One
of the neat things about it for me personally, is that I've been an
avid origamist since I was 4 years old. So having a canoe like this is
almost like having a personal signature with me on the lakes! :-)
Anyway, wanted to tell you the heads-up about this folding canoe thing.
I think it could be just the ticket for some of us more adventuresome
types!
(I'd post the link to the mfg. here, but I don't want this to appear as
spam. I don't mind doing it in my own forums, which I have, but not
here.)
Later!
