Fishing in Alaska
My first experience fishing in Alaska was in 1986. A buddy from work
and me booked our trip with an outfitter from Cordova Alaska. We flew
to Cordova and than was taken by float plane to a small cabin in Nelson
Bay. We were dropped off at the cabin, we had a small boat and motor,
the cabin had 2 bunk beds small table and gas stove. We were supplied
our food and all of the cooking utensils we needed.
Our cabin was located on a saltwater bay with a small stream about 30
feet from the front door. The salmon were stacked up in the mouth of
the stream and at times were so thick you could not help to snag the
fish. We had black bears fishing upstream from us every morning. We
fished with spinning gear medium weight with mainly Pixie lures.
Two years later I was offered a job as a Chef at a new fly out fishing
lodge in the Bristol Bay area of S.W. Alaska. The first year as chef I
only got to fish at the lake the lodge was on, by this time I had
started fly fishing. I caught Sockeye, char. I worked about 15 hours a
day 7 days a week all summer.
I was lucky enough to be offered a job as an Out Camp Guide with the
lodge. I got to spend the first part of the summer guiding on the Nush.
The river is the longest river in Alaska, 240 miles. Home of the
largest Sockeye salmon run in the world. Big king salmon run in the
first part of the summer.
We fished for the Kings by back trolling using diving plugs. Hot Pink
rattle traps were the hot lure; I was able to land with my guest
hundreds of Kings some in the 40-50 lb size.
The last part of the summer I was at our upper Nushagak camp. Fishing
for Rainbow, char, dollies, pike and graylings. Fly fishing was from a
boat or shore. The fly's we used were sculpin, egg sucking leaches,
or flesh flies. I had lots of bear sightings some at my camp that is
another story.
If you interested in going to Alaska to fish drop me a line. I will be
happy to answer any questions. You may be asking why did quit guiding.
Well all I can say is 3 months living in a tent for a gay man in the
closet and an alcoholic; the local animals became scared of the crazy
guy in the tent. So after 3 years I decided to get clean and sober and
come out of the closet.
