East Dallas Community Garden Picnic  -- October 15, noontime
1416 N Fitzhugh
This is a noontime gathering for friends of the East Dallas Community Garden.  Please bring food to share and join in the fun.  This garden is tended by refugee families from
Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Congo, and Bhutan, so the food can get interesting.  Bring a dish highlighting produce from your garden or local sources.  We often do some group dancing. The party starts at noon.  Info:  972-231-3565 or gro...@flash.net.

American Community Gardening Association Annual Conference
Attending the conference in New York City, held at Columbia University, and with guided tours of nearby garden projects, was a great learning experience.  There are hundreds of urban agriculture projects in NY and its open space challenged suburbs--forced into cramped spaces along transit corridors, on rooftops, onto polluted brownfields, and on small vacant lots here and there.  Water is a problem.  Most collect rain water from nearby rooftops, many tap into fire hydrants, and all were designed to mitigate runoff from entering streets and sewers.  The nonprofit GrowNYC has a great how-to guide:  http://www.grownyc.org/openspace/rainwater.  These gardens are vibrant assets in neighborhoods, loved by all.  Support from city governments is strong.  All exist through local community collaboration, cooperation from a myriad of city programs and the help many agencies.  To see photos of my tour of Bronx community gardens use this link to Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=211944768858602&set=a.211944718858607.82769.152124901507256&type=1&ref=nf

Volunteers needed to help with harvesting, please.  The harvest season never ends at the Center for Growing People.  The summer heat did not stop the bumper harvests of long beans, okra, eggplant, and peppers.  The regular weekly harvest is on Tuesday mornings at 9am, but if you call Becky Smith (214-564-5801) and make arrangements, your help is welcome any day (especially early mornings or evenings). This produce is grown in the Just Greens garden at Our Saviour, and is donated to the Pleasant Grove Food Pantry.
