·         India dropped nine places to 140th rank in the list of 179 countries in the latest World Press Freedom Index 2013, which is the lowest since 2002.

 

·         The Maitree Express or Dhaka-Kolkata Express is an International passenger train connecting the Bangladesh capital Dhaka and West Bengal capital Kolkata.

 

·         Election Commission of India nominated Saina Nehwal and Mary Kom as the National Icons

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD)

·         11th PBD kicked off in Kochi, Kerala.

·         This was the first time to have an exclusive session on Middle East.

·         It is celebrated on 9th January every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India.

·         January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate this occasion since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India.

Tang Prize Foundation:

·         Taiwanese Business Magnate, Samuel Yin, Launches Asia’s Nobel-Type Prizes.

·         It is  for outstanding achievements in natural and social sciences.

·         World’s largest optical telescope would be developed by the scientists of a five nation consortium namely, India, Japan, China, Canada and the US.

·         South Korea became first country in Asia to order chemical castration of 31-year-old child rapist in landmark ruling on 3rd Jan.

·         World anti Leprosy Day was observed on 30 January 2013 to focus attention and create awareness about the air-borne disease.

·         China gives go-ahead for three new dams on Brahmaputra or Yarlung Zangbo.

·         The Naval offshore patrol vessel (NOPV) INS Saryu was formally commissioned into the Indian Navy.

·         The largest shore patrol vessel was commissioned in the eastern coast for maritime surveillance around Andaman & Nicobar Islands

·         India achieved a major milestone by establishing underwater missile launch capability when K-15 missile.

·         Code-named B05 was successfully test-fired off the Visakhapatnam

·         Iran  took a "big step" towards sending astronauts into space by 2020, successfully launching a monkey above the Earth's atmosphere.

·         China’s economy, the 2nd largest economy of the world grew just 7.8 percent in 2012, which is the 13-year low.

·         Mukesh Ambani Declared 18th Richest Man in the World;

·         Urjit Patel was appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on 3 Jan 2013.

·         He would succeed Subir Gokarn whose term ended on 31 Dec 2012.

 

·         RBI notified the enhanced limit of investing in government securities by FIIs and long-term investors by $5 billion to $25 billion from $20 billion.

·         It also hiked the investment limit in corporate bonds by these entities by $5 billion $50 billion from $45 billion.
