Hey Folks,

If you are planning a trip this weekend, you have to check this out.

If you love it, please share it on Facebook and Twitter, and help get the word out. This is one of the cooler things I've had the opportunity to contribute to, though the heavy lifting was all done by my colleague Jesse, open data, and open source software.

Kind regards,
Andrew

I love it! Is this basically using the same underlying data as this website?

I have been using this for years and love it, so I’m glad to see it directly in Gaia - as long as it works just as well! ;-).

Hi Kristian,
Yes, it is based on the same underlying data from OpenStreetMap, but it uses a different routing engine, so it may generate somewhat different routes.

Oh man this is sweet.  Has big potential.  I found I sill was using the Cycling Topo (Thunderforst) map on the iPhone to cross reference stuff while using the new tool.  The Cycle map shows the names of the mtb trails which don't show up on the website. Still saved me a lot of time for calc'ing some bike trail mileage.

wow this I great! Wish I saw this before my last hike a few days ago. Would have made it easier in planning the 2 day hike.

Any plans to add this in the app?

Cool. I found where the other maps were. They are in the overlay menu vs the map menu. It's sometimes requiring me to zoom in and out to get the overlay to show. And I wasn't able to get the work imagery to work.

Hello All, Still impressed by the new trail plotting feature.  One thing I would like to put out there though, my maps are getting pretty full of tracks.  Any chance you can filter visible tracks by folder?  Currently the only option online is the entire "My tracks".  This would help when planning multiple trips in the same area.

I do notice that on mountains that have allot of trails the trail finder does get screwed up allot. Like in the presidentials in New hampshire. I tried to do a route but it refused to plot the route on the correct trail (I had cal topo map showing) even putting a dot right on the trail i wanted to take it would route to trail next to it.

Did that route show up on an OSM source like OpenHikingMap? You can't count on all the USGS trail data to be in the route-finder - the OSM sources would be truer to what gets plotted.

ah I'll have to check. Usually OSM matches pretty well with Topo's in that area since the trails have been marked on maps for a very long time
