Haven't been in the outdoors for quite some time, so I haven't been using Gaia a lot. However, I just noticed the new icon and the splash screen - and I gotta tell you I think it is ugly.... The old one was so nice, but this new one? Did you guys get some opinions on it before release?

Hey guys,

Mixed response on the icon so far - 3 users tell me they like it, 2 say they don't. The five us us working on the project all liked it too (Anna, Chris, Savannah, me, and the designer, Kim).

I decided to change the old icon for a few reasons:
  • when I looked at iTunes, I didn't think ours stood out
  • I found it hard to find on my iPhone
  • I didn't think it told you much about what the app was for
  • it was a generic earth+words that so many apps use
So, we'll see I guess... I'm not planning to change it again right away, but I keep my ears open :)

Also, for whatever reason, the old icon still shows on the App Store.

I uploaded a new icon, but iTunesConnect seems to be bugged. I need to submit a bug report.

I guess my main problem with the new icon is that I think it is more plain cartoony than stylish. And of course - the link to Gaia and 'The Gaia Hypothesis' (which is all BS) is much more pronounced with the new splash screen and icon. I would be careful not to make that link too strong as it may tick some people (like me) off.

I'm glad to hear that other people like it though - as long as the majority likes the new more than the older, then you are all set ;-).

I will say this - if anyone has a concept for an icon, I'd love to hear it. If you can describe something good, I'll have someone draw it. I am somewhat worried that the icon is too narrow - I use Gaia to hike, but people use it for all sorts of things - ATVing, skiing, and biking seem to be very popular.

As for the name, the origin is that I've was a fan of Greek mythology as a kid, Gaia is a synonym for Earth, and I like alliteration. I didn't know what the Gaia Hypothesis is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_hypothesis) but now that I do, I think that's neat :)

I will say:

While I understand that the icon may be that which causes an app shopper to pause and consider, as someone who already owns the app - I couldn't care less.

As for the splash screen, it doesn't display on my iPad at all and is gone so quick on my iPhone that I can't read it.

I certainly wouldn't waste any of my time developing some philosophical relationship implied by the name.

My life's too short and my time's too valuable.

In 6.3, the splash doesn't show in Landscape mode. That is fixed in 6.3.1.

As for it showing very quickly - for other apps we've made, people we worked with have twice asked us to make the splash screen show longer, which seems a  it crazy to me from a user's perspective :)
