Hey folks,

A user told us about the sources available at www.caltopo.com, and we have made them available in the app.

To add, go to Settings->Help, and click the "Add Topo Map Sources" link (the top link).

These include topos and aerials of California, as well as a USGS topo source for the continental US.

Regards,
Andrew

I just started exploring these new map sources. The "Visitor" and
"Historic" layers are great addition. The Visitor layer gives access
to map sources that I used to go to Maplets to get -- NPS maps and
USFS maps. I'm excited. You ROCK!

P.S. I got the t-shirt.

Pete,

I didn't realize that is easier than I thought. I'm looking into setting up a service like this: http://warper.geothings.net/maps/warp/5054

This lets you import a map from disk, geo-reference it against OSM, and then it makes a map source like we use in Gaia.

My friend tells me he will spin up an instance for me this weekend, but we'll see!

There used to be an app on the app store that did this. you take a
picture of a map. go to 3 places on the map and mark them with GPS on.
then it would GPS enable the map.

Used to be?

That's basically what this thing does, just on a website.

You'll generate a link that you can click and open the source in Gaia.

It's really cool to browse the historic map for the SF Bay Area. No bridges! Not positive how useful this map source is, but it's very cool.

Peter -

I'm the creator of caltopo.com and these map layers. The visitor map
was an experiment; I wasn't really sure how it would turn out or how
useful it would be. It's also more labor-intensive than the other map
layers - not only do I have to georeference each image by aligning a
few points with real-world coordinates, I have to crop them carefully
so that the extraneous legends on one map don't overwrite a
neighboring one. Someday maybe I'll find a high school student I can
pay to fill out the rest of the US for me, but until then, if you'd
like to see a particular map added let me know. If you can send me a
high-resolution TIFF and the real-world coordinates of a couple points
close to the corners (e.g. pixel 245,120 is at 39.2,-120.5), it makes
it that much easier on me, but it's not necessary.

Since I created the layers and my site doesn't compete with GaiaGPS,
I'll also note that you can print them at http://caltopo.com/map.html
(select the page size icon in the top right). Chrome will let you do
borderless prints, which is a great way to sneak a historical map or
topo of your favorite getaway through a large-format office printer
and onto a cubicle wall.

The USFS and historical layers are currently CA-only, but will be
going nationwide (where available) shortly.

Matt,

That is really cool, I am looking forward to Michigan.
