From the Podium

I love concerts for young children. It is so important that children have a positive experience of live music and of concert going when they are young! I believe that if we make concerts kid friendly, play great music and create the right kind of atmosphere, it can make a difference for the rest of their lives. That is why, at the GVO, we take so much care in our planning and preparation for these programs.

This year, the GVO's Family Concert will be focused on one of the classics from the world of children's orchestral repertoire: The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. There will be music by Mozart and Mendelssohn as well, but in this program, designed especially for young children, the GVO will tell the story of The Lonely Lion who is in search of a friend. In our story, the lion meets lots of animals but because he roars so much, he always scares them away. We will be joined by many musical friends for this concert. GVO assistant conductor Yaniv Segal and I will share the podium, (so that I can play the piano), violinist Erika Mitsui, 2006 winner of the GVO Young Artists competition will be there and our animals will be played by the wonderful dancers from Washington Irving High School.

We hope you will join us, bring as many children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends that you can round up. All ages are welcome and don't forget to check out the Instrument Petting Zoo after the concert where kids get a hands–on experience of the instruments of the orchestra. See you at the show!
