Assistant Professor

The Urban Studies Program at the University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor (0116) in community planning. This is a full-time position with a 9-month service period and begins September 2015 (Autumn Quarter). Candidates are expected to have an active research agenda that utilizes critical social theory and engages questions of urban social justice and community engagement, broadly defined. The successful candidate will be expected to move comfortably between theoretical work and action-oriented practices and teach courses related to participatory action research, civic engagement, community organizing, inclusive planning, strategic analysis and communications, organizational change, social innovation, and/or policy advocacy. We are open to a wide range of research interests, including but not limited to environmental justice, affordable housing, real estate development, social movements, transit equity, urban/environmental pla!
 nning, and urban design. Disciplinary background is open, but a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) by the time of appointment and expertise in an urban or planning related field is required. A candidate in the final stages of his/her dissertation would be appointed on an acting basis.

Established in 2001, the Urban Studies Program currently offers degrees leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Urban Development, a Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies, along with a certificate program in Geographic Information Systems. The new faculty member will be expected to contribute to a planned Master of Arts degree in Community Planning. The Urban Studies Program currently enrolls approximately 120 undergraduate and graduate students and has approximately 12 full-time faculty and lecturers.
