Dear all,

We are writing on behalf of the Latin American Cities Working Group, a group of scholars interested in Latin American urban studies and planning. The group was created in 2010 by seven PhD students at UC Berkeley and seeks to promote an inter-disciplinary dialogue from which to improve the linkages between urban theory and practice. From its inception, the group has grown to include members from universities across the US and Latin America in disciplines as diverse as city planning, geography, anthropology, history and sociology. Currently, Prof. Teresa Caldeira (UC Berkeley) and Prof. Clara Irazábal (Columbia University) serve as key advisors for the group. During this past conference, held in Chicago, Julie Gamble and Sergio Montero from UC Berkeley served as key organizers.

The Latin American Cities Working Group used the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) 2012 Congress in San Francisco as a catalyst for the working group. There, we worked to create 3 panels as well as a pre-LASA, day-long workshop with Prof. Clara Irazábal. This was a first effort to meet scholars interested in similar issues from other universities as well as to expand the group. For the following edition of the congress in Washington, DC, in 2013, the group led a slightly smaller effort with only one panel. This past conference, the group made a significant effort that resulted in a total of 10 sessions, 9 panels and 1 invited panel, plus an additional Pre-LASA workshop organized with the support of the Great Cities Institute at University of Illinois, Chicago.

For LASA 2015 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, we want to continue the group’s efforts to consolidate a transnational network of scholars and professionals working on urban studies in Latin America. Last June LASA announced the schedule for proposal submissions as well as the guidelines for requesting travel funding for the 2015 congress. Next year’s congress topic is precariedades, exclusiones, emergencias which will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and will run from May 27th to the 30th. As many of you have worked or are working on topics related to urban studies in Latin America, we thought you might be interested in submitting papers or organizing panel presentations for LASA 2015.

If this sounds like something that interests you, there are two ways in which you could participate; in either case we would ask you to complete by next Friday, July 25 the following form: http://tinyurl.com/ounr49l

1) Being a panel organizer. If you are interested in organizing a panel for LASA 2015, please elaborate some ideas on a theme for a panel and provide some names of professors/scholars/practitioner that you think could serve either as presenters or discussants. These ideas do not need to be very elaborate yet; rather we want to have a rough idea on themes of interest. The group can help by providing feedback on the theme, putting you in contact with other members of the group that might be interested in the same theme, as well as eventually circulating your call for papers through our email lists. You could organize a panel by yourself or together with a colleague. A description of the roles at LASA panels is available at http://lasa.international.pitt.edu/eng/congress/roles.asp

2) Submitting a paper. If you are interested in submitting a paper for LASA 2015 and would like to know about our panel themes and calls for papers, please also fulfill the survey but question #8.

More information on the LASA 2015 Congress can be found here: http://lasa.international.pitt.edu/eng/congress/

Best regards,

Catalina Ortiz*, Ivis Garcia**, and Natalia Villamizar-Duarte**
