Job Description: The role of the Principal User Researcher will be to own and guide user research efforts for an unannounced project based in Hangzhou, China. Reporting to the User Research Director, and supported by the project’s Producer, you are responsible for being a key player in defining research strategy, advocating for the player experience, managing playtests, and assisting developers to make informed decisions based on user research methods, tools, and data.
The ideal candidate for this role will need to be a strong performer in user research methods, have a proven track record of shipping games, and be a consistent advocate for user-centered approaches to game development. Your role is meant to complement production strategy, to inform direction, and to help deliver the best gaming experiences possible.
The Lead User Researcher will be embedded in a development team in Hangzhou, China and work closely with production partners. You will also work closely with the rest of the user research team and co-dev partners based out of Toronto and Montreal, Canada. You will need to be able to work cross-functionally with multi-disciplinary groups, and able to navigate ambiguity and competing priorities when it comes to our growing catalogue of games in development. You are a strong communicator, that is passionate about video games and the discipline of games user research.
This is an in-office role based out of Hangzhou, China. For candidates not currently residing in China, relocation is offered. There is also an expectation of remote work and travel in order to collaborate with partners in Canada.
Responsibilities:
Own and conduct user research studies for projects in various phases of production.
Collaborate with production partners based in Canada and China, identifying problems and goals, and translating them into research opportunities.
Guide user research initiatives for our games developed in Canada and China, with regular collaboration with overseas peers.
Translate design and production goals into research opportunities.
Collaborate with brand and marketing teams associated with the project.
Design and execute user test plans using appropriate methods to meet test objectives.
Support user test recruitment efforts by emailing, calling, and screening potential participants.
Analyze test data to understand participant behaviour and identify potential improvements.
Write up reports and come up with impactful recommendations grounded in data.
Oversee the work of other user researchers, assigning and reviewing tasks across areas of the project and with user tests.
Act as a coach and mentor, as well as leading other researchers towards innovative and creative thinking when approaching research challenges.
Collaborate with analytics team to ensure collection of relevant data, it’s quality, and support the group with preparation and coordination of data collection tools for user test efforts.
Keep up with new technologies, techniques, and best practices in user research.
Qualifications:
Minimum BA/BS degree in HCI, Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology, UX Design, or any other relevant training or experience.
Candidates must have working language proficiency in both Chinese and English.
Candidates currently residing in China are preferred, but not a requirement (relocation is offered).
7+ years’ experience in user research in a game production environment.
Must have extremely strong knowledge of the video game industry and production cycles.
Experience in the full user research test process, including building project relationships, identifying development problems/goals, study design and planning, recruiting, moderating, analysis, reporting, etc.
Strong communication skills and an ability to manage a variety of stakeholders in different levels of the organization.
Experience navigating complex and ambiguous problem spaces with competing sets of expectations and priorities.
