Dear all,

We are pleased to invite you for the 8th State Conference of IPTA, Madhya Pradesh to be held at Indore on 1st and 2nd October, 2012. This year is the centenary year of the great artist and cultural activist Balraj Sahni, whose contribution to IPTA brought it much acclaim and respect. We have recently lost our national President and the well known actor of Hindi Films Shri. A. K. Hangal. We are dedicating this conference to the fond and inspiring memories of Balraj Sahni and A. K. Hangal.

The Conference will be inaugurated by renowned theatre personality Ms. Kirti Jain. She has acted in and directed many plays, served as Director of National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi and lectured on various aspects of theater across the globe. She is now a Professor of Modern Indian Drama Department at NSD. She has high regards for IPTA. Her father Nemichand Jain, as well as her mother Rekha Jain was the part of IPTA Central Squad in 1940s. Kirtiji has had the good fortune to hear first hand narration of the hardships faced by the comrades in those days and also the strong conviction of working together for the betterment of people. Shri Jitendra Raghuvanshi (National General Secretary, IPTA, Agra), Vijay Hangal (Mumbai), Rakesh and Veda (Lucknow), Ashok Mishr (Mumbai), Noor Zaheer, Prof. Lata Singh, Shubhendu Ghosh, Flora Bose, Shantiveer, Savi Sawarkar, Amitabh Pandey (all from Delhi), Ishwar Singh Dost (Goa), Ashish Tripathi (Varanasi), and many others will be the special guests on this occasion.

Habib Tanveer was another great personality who remained associated with IPTA till his last breath. Representatives of his drama group Naya Theatre will also be the special guests on this occasion. His daughter, noted artist and singer Nageen Tanveer will sing some of the revolutionary songs written by Habib Tanveer himself, Faiz, Makhdoom and other revolutionary poets.

A solo play ‘Le mashalen’ based on the life of Irom Sharmila Chanu of Manipur will be presented by Ojas (Pune). Five more plays will be shown on 2nd evening. These will be Chhatarpur unit’s Bade Bhaisaheb (written by Premchand), Ashoknagar unit’s Courtmarshal (written by Swadesh Deepak), Guna unit’s Poster (Shankar Shesh), Sendhwa’s tribal children's play ‘Bhanai’ based on tribal approach towards the question of education (written by Amit and Jayshree) and Indore unit’s play ‘Tota kahani’ (written by Rabindranath Thakur).

There would be Street Plays, revolutionary songs and rally of cultural activists during these two days of conference. The venue of the day time sessions would be Rakhodiwala Dharmshala, Pardeshipura Chouraha, Indore. Staying and food arrangements will also be at the same place. The evening performances will take place in Anand Mohan Mathur Auditorium, near Bapat Chouraha, Vijay Nagar, Indore. The Rakhodiwala Dharmshala is about 5 kilometres from main Railway Station and Sarvate Bus Stand. Those who are coming by bus from Dewas side are advised to get off at Lifeline Chouraha or Vijaynagar Chouraha. Rakhodiwala Dharmshala is hardly 2 kilometres from there.

Registration fee for the participants is Rs. 100 per person. Those who are interested to participate, please inform us in advance about the arrival and departure plans so that we can make better arrangements.

Around 200 people interested in theatre and arts from various places would be gathering here for the conference. The day time would be spent in discussing the issues of Culture. The theme of the Conference is kept “People’s Movements and Theatre.”

It would be interesting to know that Indore is the place where IPTA’s activities have always been in tune with the progressive mass movements. IPTA was active in Indore during late 40s and then throughout 50s. People like Rajendra Mathur, Ranaveer Saxena, Vishnu Chinchalkar, Mayarani Mehrotra, Sajan Mehrotra, Keki Daji, Anand Mohan Mathur, Prof. D. N. Mishraraj, Narhari Patel were the active members in those days. After that IPTA activities slowed down as the artists got settled with other jobs. Again, when the city as well as the nation saw an attack on working class in 80s, IPTA reemerged in the town. Street plays were performed showing solidarity with textile mill workers who were struggling for their rights. And in the post globalization era Indore unit of IPTA is again trying to unveil the mask of capitalism bring to light the struggles waged by various sections of the society.

IPTA had been and will always be struggling for attainment of a peaceful, just and  exploitation free society.
