I have been on all the tours offered of it. Lots of interesting history there. A number of people died building the dam. The things they had to do to get it built are completely nuts. Also, I found it fascinating that because of the stories of people being buried inside the dam during construction, they have X-Rayed (word?) every square inch of the dam to make sure there were no human remains detected. It is something like 700 feet thick at the bottom. It is so massive it is overhwelming and makes me woozy just being around it.

A Civil Engineering student (John Paul Rainey) that I went to college with, helped to build Glenn Canyon Dam. He was there from 1962 until it was finished. I wasn't that much of an environmentalist back then but hated to see the dam built as it inundated a lot of Southwestern Culture and History. If you've never been in that region you should go. Take the back roads from Farmington, NM along the San Juan and then on into Page. There are cliff dwellings and many other historic sites. If you need to be entertained and must stay in a Hilton every night don't go. It's quite desolate and remote The amenities are there but can be pretty primitive. It's a lot like Big Bend and Chinati Springs in SW Texas. Go in early spring or in the fall. It can be brutally hot and hostile in the summer and mucha bad weather in the winter (bitter cold and heavy snows).
