Hi everyone,

 

Wanted to share that today, the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law published our election-season edition of the “Voting Laws Roundup.” It offers statistics and trends in the voting and election laws affecting the 2024 election. The roundup also breaks down the laws in effect for the election by impact.

 

Highlights (starting January 1, 2021, and ending on September 16, 2024):

 

  • At least 63 restrictive voting laws enacted since 2021 will be in effect across 29 states for the 2024 election, including 4 battleground states (see in bold below). This will be the first presidential election that voters in these states will face these restrictive laws.
    • The 29 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, FloridaGeorgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming
    • 33 of the 63 restrictive laws affect mail voting

 

  • At least 31 election interference laws enacted since 2021 will be in effect across 14 states, including 3 battleground states.
    • The 14 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, FloridaGeorgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas.

 

  • At least 156 expansive laws enacted since 2021 will be in effect across 41 states and the District of Columbia, including 4 battleground states. This will be the first presidential election that voters in these states could benefit from these expansive laws.
    • The 41 states are: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming
