Manusmriti was composed by Swayambhuva Manu, the first of the 14 Manus or progenitors of mankind according to Hindu scriptures. He was born around 9500 BC and was the son of Brahma, the creator god. Some scholars believe that Manusmriti was later modified by Indrasavarni, the 14th Manu. Manusmriti is divided into 12 chapters and has between 2684 to 2964 verses.
