Hi everyone,
I've included below the Global Kids Island
monthly newsletter, which we distribute in-world on the teen grid.
Hopefully this can give people a sense of things that are happening in
that space, and make sure that what happens in the teen grid doesn't
just stay in the teen grid.
We do have some events or announcements
that are relevant for main gridders, and I've highlighted in red items
I thought would be relevant or GK events that are happening on the
main grid.
Also, if you're an educator or parent that
would like to get your teen students involved in GK programs on the
teen grid, feel free to mail me off-list.
best,
Rafi

++ Fireside
Workshop - ICED Game Party! ++
Join us for the
VIDEO GAME party for ICED! What is ICED you
ask? It stands for I Can End Deportation, and it's a free 3D
downloadable RPG about immigration. The game lets players
experience the effects of current immigration laws on detention and
deportation on legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, students and
undocumented people, effects that often violate human rights and deny
due process.

+++++RECENT EVENTS+++++
++
Changemakers Press Event ++
For the first time in the Global Kids' Online Leadership Program's
history, GK hosted a Changemakers Press Event on January 30 to
showcase and celebrate the success of the D.I.D.I. Pioneers and to
announce two new TSL projects GK is launching. The event was an
enormous success, with our SIM full to capacity, and positive feedback
from both attendees and press.
Thank you Linden Lab for the wonderful support on getting members of
the press into TSL for this event!

as a result of it here:

Fireside Workshops: Sustainability and Economic Inequality
++
This past month
we had some fantastic fireside workshops dealing with issues of Global
Economic Inequality and Environmental Sustainability. The
inequality workshop included a game in which participants crossed the
globe to determine population and wealth concentrations, and the
sustainability workshop featured a screening of the film "The Story
of Stuff", which outlines the global challenges that the current
culture of consumption poses and it might mean for the
future. Check out storyofstuff.org to watch it if you weren't
able to make the workshop!
++ The TSL
YAM Revival! ++
Does the
TSL community play an important role in your life? Do you care about
the role that adults play in it? Missed the TSL YAM (Youth
Advocates Manifesto) meeting that happened in January? Want to
help shape the YAM Seal of Approval?
IM Rafi GKid to get added to the YAM wiki and help shape the YAM, a
document, contributed to by both youth and adults, that lays out ways
that both of those groups believe adults should behave while in
TSL.
++ Intern
Event - Beauty, Real vs. Perceived? ++
Led by Nafiza Gkid, this workshop examined inner and outer beauty, and
the outlook people have on the two. It looked at how media has
influenced how we view what the ideal "beauty" is. It
was a great way to start off the new year with a new outlook on what
real beauty is, no matter the race, gender, orientation, religious
preferences, etc.!

++ Virtual
Liberties: Do Avatars Dream of Civil Rights? ++
Second Life, on both the main and teen grids, has a long history of
residents that fight for civil liberties. From Fleabite Beach's
resistance movement against an early Linden prim tax to teen led
protests to engage in cross grid commerce, SL residents have proven
themselves to be civic beings.
The Virtual Liberties event, held of January 28th, was MacArthur's 2nd
live conversation in Second Life, and featured MacArthur Foundation
President Jonathan Fanton, Linden Lab's Robin Harper, and
constitutional law professor Jack Balkin.
