Does anyone know of a source for a bike to help this family?

Subject: program question

Hi There,

I was wondering if you had any information about programs in the Eugene/Springfield area that possibly donate bikes to families depending on their situation? I am working with a family (mom, dad, three kiddos who are all homeless, staying at a family shelter currently). We are trying to find a bike for dad for a job that he will need to ride to that is about five miles out of town. He is really hoping to bike so he doesn’t have to bus then walk. Are you aware of any programs in town that might help with bike donations or purchases?

Thank you for your time,

Thalassa

Thanks, you guys.

Thallasa, as you can see, I forwarded your message to the leaders of GEARs, as well as to a few other people who have been involved in the past in rehabbing bikes to give away.

I agree that talking to CAT would be helpful.  In addition, St. Vinnie’s has a program for veterans that involves bike repair (that might be the program Lyn referred to), and the UO Bike Program teaches classes in bike repair/maintenance, so it’s possible they would be able to help.  The City of Eugene also periodically auctions off bikes that have been recovered and have not been claimed—I don’t know if they have rules against simply giving them to deserving people, but it might be worth asking.  Finally, the various thrift stores often have bikes that they sell very cheaply, and I would think we could come up with someone who’s a good mechanic (unfortunately, that is certainly NOT me!) and would donate the labor to do any repairs needed on such a bike.

So I hope this give you a place to start.  I’ll let you know if I hear back from any more of the people I have contacted.

Thanks for contacting GEARs, and good luck.  We appreciate your trying to help this family get back on their feet—or even better, on wheels!

There are two nonprofits I would start with. Center for Appropriate Transport (CAT) does a lot of refurbishment of bikes. I don't know if they donate any of these but it's worth asking. I'm on the board of Sponsors and I know that bike repair is one of the activities that many of their clients do. I'm not sure if the bikes are then used only by clients,  or if  there are extras, but you can ask.

If neither of these work let me know because we could then put it out to our GEARS members who sometimes have more bikes than they need.
