A question for you: Several times now I have passed somebody (different person each time) riding along the bike path carrying something, and a minute or two later it occurs to me "You know, I'll bet that was a stolen bike (or wheels, or frame, or whatever) he was carrying". I certainly have no proof, and I'm sure they'd deny it if I ever tried to inquire about where the bike came from--and generally speaking by the time I could get my phone out to snap a photo, they'd be gone. Is there any way to take action on such a hunch (preferably without getting beat up)?

Don't know what you can do.

I am suspicious of people wheeling an extra bike next to their bike.

I would like to have bike license plates required, tied to bike serial number. Might get more convictions on bike theft.

I don’t like the idea of bike license plates but we should all register our bikes (perhaps most do but it’s hard to get around to it).

If you see someone carrying a bike or part you could ask if they need help or if they are looking for someone to buy it. Then you could photo it/them “to show to someone who might need it” and ask how they could be contacted (email; phone?). Just an idea.

Sue,

Shortly after you wrote this message Jackie Murdoff's bicycle was stolen from outside Lawrence Hall at the UO.  You probably saw her message.  Here's my reply:

Hi Jackie,

I'm so sorry this happened.  I've been thinking about it ever since we went separate ways at Lawrence Hall this evening. Your Surly is a valuable bike so please report it to the police so they know.  You might also try using one of several search engines such as SearchTempest to see if it's posted on any Craigslist nationwide.  I haven't used this but a friend suggested it in a conversation recently.

I want to get serious about working with police to stage sting operations so that thieves learn that Eugene isn't a place to steal bikes.  Other police departments have done this successfully.  An OregonLive article this March describes Reed College's bike sting operation with a GPS tracker.  You can also watch several videos of sting operations if you search "Bike Bait" or "Bike Sting" on Google.
As a member of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee I will take initiative so we can start dealing with this problem.

If possible engage the individual telling them how much you "like their bike". Or hey, "this is a classic........not made anymore or limited edition". Then see where it goes from there?

Thanks Allen,
SearchTempest makes it much easier to use CL, even extending the range(4000m).
