Hi guys

If you haven't come across me yet, I am now helping to organise many of the events for the GDC. I'm a Cranford too, related to Barry through marriage - my husband is Barry's uncle, and there is a post about what I do in the Recworks blog, for anyone who is interested.

It's been a while since we last called for mentors, but there has been a great deal of planning and discussion behind the scenes and we do have some dates to work towards.

This term we'll be at University College London on the evening of 19th November for a classic Meet a Mentor session - speed dating style, so that each mentor meets each small group of students. Mentors will tell the students a little bit about themselves, their career paths and the area of the industry that they are working in and then respond to the students' questions - What's it like working in a start up? What tech are you using at the moment? and lots more too. A poll will be posted very soon asking you to sign up if you are available that evening.

We are discussing dates with King's College and Queen Mary for similar sessions and these are likely to be held in late January or early February. Also in the new year we are planning to run more Career Hacking Interview Skills events. There will be more news about all these events as soon as we have dates. Have you seen our Career Hacking presentation? It's created quite a bit of interest when we've shared it with developers, and we think it explains the mentoring principle well.

I do hope that you'll be able to mentor this academic year. As anyone who has mentored in the past knows, these sessions are really valuable to the students, and if we can have a wide range of different experiences representative of the wider developer community, that would be awesome.

As I said earlier, it's been a while since we've communicated through this group and I know that people's circumstances change. If you no longer have the time to mentor, or if you have moved and are no longer based near London, you may want to leave this group to avoid getting unwanted messages... please first accept my thanks for everything you have done for the community!

Finally, if you know someone who would make a good mentor, please do introduce them to me - we are always happy to welcome experienced developers to the group.

Best wishes and thank you!

Maggie

Hi everyone,

One last call for mentors for Thursday 19th November. It would be awesome to have two or three extra offers so we can set up a panel that is representative of as many aspects of the industry, and of people working in the industry, as possible. We’ll be confirming the mentors at the end of this week.

Thanks again!

Anj
