Dear Friend,

The Right to Work campaign has initiated a protest at the Tory Party conference in Birmingham on Sunday 3 October.

The protest has been backed by national unions such as the PCS, UCU and NUJ, MP's including John McDonnell and Caroline Lucas and a swathe of regional and local trade union bodies and campaign groups.

An initial meeting with the West Midlands Police agreed a route for the protest, allowing it to pass by the conference venue.

However the police have now gone back on their original commitment and have offered a route that will take the demonstration around the back streets of Birmingham, far away from the conference itself.

Right to Work has initiated a statement calling on the police to reverse their recent decision and allow a peaceful protest with a sensible route to go ahead.

We believe that it is crucial to defend our basic democratic right to protest against a Tory government that is seeking to destroy the welfare state and is set to condemn a generation to the dole queues.

We would ask you to sign the attached statement or see it at http://righttowork.org.uk/

If you have any questions regarding the protest or the statement please do not hesitate to contact us.

Michael Bradley, Right to Work Steering Committee
