Start the New Year fighting back

Right to Work Bulletin 6th January 2011

2011 starts with an increase in VAT which hits us all and with 200,000 council jobs facing being axed. This year will see the biggest attack on our living standards and welfare services in living memory. There is also a growing level of resistance.

A People’s Convention to build resistance to cuts and austerity

The 12 February People’s Convention is now being organised by the Right to Work Campaign together with the Labour Representation Committee, Disabled People Against the Cuts and others.

One of its central aims will be to help build the 26th March UK wide demonstration called by the TUC in London against cuts so that it is the biggest protest since those against the invasion of Iraq . We also want the day to be one where we come together behind the magnificent protests mounted by students. They need to be a central part of the 26th March demonstration.

Join Jimmy Kelly, Secretary, Unite the Union in Ireland (pc), Katy Clark MP, Barbara Pettine of the  Italian engineering union, FIOM, Captain Ska, producer of the hugely popular Liar Liar YouTube hit, Andrej Hunko, Die Linke MP in Germany , John McDonnell MP, Jeremy Corbyn MP and many others at the People’s Convention Against Cuts & austerity on Saturday 12 February in Central London .

Andrej, Barbara and Jimmy will report on the resistance which is being mounted across Europe to austerity.

Jimmy will report on the devastating spiral of austerity and cuts which has devastated the Irish Republic – a warning of what might await under Cameron, Clegg and Osborne.

Barbara will report on a car battle at the heart of the European car industry. Fiom members at Fiat will be on strike on 28 January over the imposition of more ‘flexible’ working practices. The company aims to increase the number of shifts and limit strikes and benefits.
Andrej will outline an alternative which means working people do not pick up the bill for this crisis.

Proposed workshops:
  • Organising claimants against benefit cuts
  • Disabled people – at the forefront of resistance Sponsored by Disabled People Against the Cuts
  • Students – at the forefront of struggle Sponsored by National Campaign Against Cuts & Fees and Education Activists Network
  • How trades councils can build resistance
  • Labour and the cuts
  • Organising a local anti-cuts campaign
