3 mega celebration happening at the same time, we could not have asked for a
better occasion.
The “Dhaatubhajana” is one of the most popular cultural performances among the Telugu community which is originated from the state of Andhra Pradesh in the Southern India region. In Malaysia, Dhatubhajana is widely performed during Telugu festivals such as “Ugadi” (Telugu New Year) and official Telugu Association of Malaysia (TAM) functions. In order to promote this cultural performance to the Malaysia multiracial community, TAM National Youth have taken the initiative towards “Dhaatubhajana” with these objectives:
· To create a record in Malaysia Books of Records for the Longest “Dhaatubhajana” Performance
· To expose the younger generation to learn and practice “Dhaatubhajana”
· To promote the Telugu community culture to the multiracial community of Malaysia.
“Dhaatubhajana”, a dance where dancers move in a circular motion around the ‘bhajana chettu’ with all the lamps lit to the rhythm of the ‘bhajana’ music sung in the background. ‘Bhajana Chettu’, is a large brass lamp in a form of tree with smaller lamps attached to it. The art of “Dhaatubhajana” started as early as Telugu community stepped to Malaya and still being followed in respect to our ancestors who have sung and danced around this tree.
After 150 years of Telugu Heritage in Malaysia, we are proud that “Dhaatubhajana” is still being practiced and followed by the Telugu Community of Malaysia. In actual fact, we have already achieved a feat by organising this event. MBR record aside, we have already successfully introduced the culture to more than 300 youths and children nationwide. “Dhaatubhajana” as a cultural event was slowly heading towards the end with only a couple of location practising it but through the process of gearing towards MBR, we manage to bring back the culture to more than 20 different locations nationwide through the various TAM branches.
