Izaak Walton League to Host Public Meeting on Mississippi Plan

The Central Minnesota Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America will host an informational "mini-conference" Saturday, January 20th, on the proposed changes to the management plan for the state-designated "Scenic" portion of the Mississippi River. The conference is open to the public, and will be held at the Atwood Memorial Center (Voyageurs Room North) on the campus of St. Cloud State University. The conference will begin at 1:00 PM and close at 3:00 PM. A $5.00 donation is suggested.

Speakers will include Bruce Johnson, Executive Director of Minnesota Waters, a state conservation group, Dan Lais, Area Hydrologist with the Department of Natural Resources, and local activists Jane Korte and Don Dinndorf. Topics will include a brief history of the state law and why the Scenic portion of the Mississippi was so-designated, the current status of the management plan, and recent and future threats facing the River.

"With this conference, we hope to bring the latest information to citizens who have an interest in the River," said Don Dinndorf, President of the Central Minnesota Chapter of the IWLA. "Accelerating development pressure threatens this resource, and many people in the area have shown how much they care about its future."

Dinndorf noted the conference will come after the January 12th deadline for the current comment period on the plan, but said there will be other opportunities down the road for citizens to make their voices heard.

Weather permitting, a short "river walk" on the Beaver Island Trail will take place after the conference.
