Excellent article which mentions Garabandal:

by Arthur Policarpio

In the past several years, there has been a prevalence of “end-time prophecies”. Various apparitions of Our Lady, as well as numerous private revelations, all refer to the current times we are living in as the “end times”. Their common theme: that our present generation will witness the Second Coming of Christ.

In the ongoing Medjugorje apparitions, the six visionaries received ten secrets - all prophecies pertaining to future events leading up to the Second Coming of Jesus that will happen in our generation. Our Lady has said that the visionaries will witness the fulfillment of the prophecies. While the Church is still investigating the apparitions, the fruits of the apparitions are abundantly clear: since the apparitions began more than 30 years ago, more than 40 million pilgrims have visited Medjugorje, with countless stories of conversion and healing.

Stanley Villavicencio is a Filipino who travels all around the world to give his amazing testimony: that he died, and lived again for Divine Mercy. His case was thoroughly examined by his diocese. Stanley quit his job and now goes all around the world proclaiming his testimony on the Divine Mercy Devotion on a full-time basis, with the blessings of the Church hierarchy. On August 31, 1994, he received this striking message: “My son, you will witness My final coming.” Stanley is currently 59 years old.

In an apparition of Our Lady in Rwanda, Africa approved by the local Bishop in 1995, the visionaries were told to prepare for the Second Coming of the Lord. Alphonsine says: “She (the Blessed Mother) said to pray hard – we must prepare now for the return of her Son Jesus.”

And we can hardly shrug off what the Lord Jesus said to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska of Poland (St. Faustina’s Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul): “You will prepare the world for My final coming…let all mankind recognize My unfathomable mercy. It is a sign for the end times; after it will come the day of justice.”

Other contemporary apparitions of Our Lady likewise speak of the End Times: Garabandal and Akita, to name a few. Akita speaks of a “great chastisement” by fire that will befall the world - unless mankind repents. Garabandal speaks of interventions planned by the Lord to prepare the world for His Second Coming: a worldwide Warning, a worldwide Miracle, and a cataclysmic Chastisement if the world does not repent.

The unmistakable fact is that there are many modern-day prophecies and apparitions that are telling us that the Second Coming of Jesus will happen in our generation.

Can we Trust Private Revelation?

The question, then, is this: can we trust these prophecies and private revelations on the End Times?

The Catholic Church has always cautioned the faithful against trusting private revelations - and rightfully so, since there are many fake revelations with questionable origins. The problem, though, with this overly critical and doubtful attitude towards private revelations is that there is a tendency to dismiss all private revelations.

But then, who are we to say that God cannot communicate with us as He chooses to? Throughout history, in fact, God has always communicated to His people through “private revelations”. The burning bush of Moses, the revelations of the prophets, Noah, Daniel, Revelations as revealed to St. John - all of these are private revelations no different from those happening today. The only difference between the private revelations of the past and the private revelations of the present is that those in the past were documented in the Bible.

If we simply ignore these modern-day prophecies without, at the very least, studying them and sincerely asking the Lord for the grace of discernment, then we will be no different from the people during the time of Noah. They jeered Noah and scorned his prophesied Great Flood - and ultimately paid the price:

As it was in the days of Noah, they ate and drank, married and were giving in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the Ark and the flood came and destroyed them all...Even shall it be in the day when the Son of Man shall be revealed. (Luke 17:26-30)

In the “Graces and Mercy” prayer book, Pope Urban VIII (1623-44) is quoted as saying: “In cases which concern private revelation, it is better to believe than not to believe, for, if you believe, and it is proven true, you will be happy that you have believed, because our Holy Mother asked it. If you believe, and it should be proven false, you will receive all blessings as if it had been true, because you believed it to be true.”

The Marian Movement of Priests and Laity

How do we know which of the various end-time revelations is trustworthy?

Among the various revelations, perhaps the most widely-accepted “source” is the book “Our Lady Speaks to Her Beloved Priests” - a collection of private revelations given to Fr. Stefano Gobbi by Our Lady. The messages bear the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur (nothing contrary to faith or morals) from James Byrne, S.T.D., former Archbishop of Dubuque, Donald Montrose, D.D., Bishop of Stockton, and Bernardino Cardinal Echevarria Ruiz, O.F.M., Archbishop Emeritus of Guayaquil.

Perhaps the most important criterion for determining the authenticity of a private revelation is the fruits produced. In the case of the revelations to Fr. Gobbi, the messages have spawned a worldwide movement - the Marian Movement of Priests and Lay People - that today has millions of members throughout the world, including more than 300 bishops and sixty thousand priests.

Our Lady calls the priests of the Marian Movement “Apostles of the Last Times.” In a December 24, 1990 message of Our Lady to Fr. Gobbi, she specifically mentioned that “Jesus...is returning to you in glory”:

You have entered into the last times. And so, receive the prophetic announcements which...have pointed out to you that this, his Second Birth, is close at hand. As Mother of the Second Advent, I am preparing you for his new birth. For this reason, in every part of the world, I am on the point of forming the cohort of the little ones, of the poor, of the humble, and the pure in heart to prepare thus a precious cradle for Jesus who is returning to you in glory.

Biblical Signs Indicating the Return of Jesus

In a December 31, 1992 message to Fr. Gobbi, Our Lady said:

I have announced to you many times that the end of the times and the coming of Jesus in glory is very near. Now, I want to help you understand the signs described in the Holy Scriptures, which indicate that His glorious return is now close...I have wanted to teach you about these signs, which Jesus has pointed to you in His gospel, in order to prepare you for the end of the times, because these are about to take place in your days.

The first sign is the spread of errors. 2 Thessalonians 2-3 says that “the day of the Lord will not come unless the great apostasy comes first.” The “apostasy” referred to here is the general loss of faith.

It will not take a theologian figure out that majority of people in the world today essentially live pagan lives. There may no longer be human sacrifices (at least in public), worship of golden calves, and other similar pagan practices of old. But these have been replaced by the modern idols of materialism, sex, rationalism, love of self, and many other vices.

Errors about the Faith are being spread all over the world, with even renowned theologians questioning traditional Catholic doctrines and teachings, such as celibacy, the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, the role of mediation of Mary, and many others. The result of all this is the general loss of Faith among majority of the world’s population. Jesus has said, “When the Son of Man returns, will He still find faith in the earth?”

The second sign is the outbreak of wars and fratricidal struggles. Jesus said:

When you hear of reports of wars, close at hand or far away, see that you are not alarmed; for these things must happen. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many places. All this will be only the beginning of greater sufferings to come. Evildoing will be so widespread that the love of many will grow cold. But God will save those who persevere until the end. (Mt 24, 6-8. 12-13)

.

We have only to switch on our television sets to CNN to realize that wars threaten our world. The Middle East is literally a time-bomb waiting to explode.

The third sign is the bloody persecution of Christians. Jesus said:

They will hand you over to persecution and they will kill you. You will be hated by all because of me. And then many will abandon the faith; they will betray and hate one another. Meanwhile, the message of the kingdom of God will be preached in all the world; all nations must hear it. And then the end will come. (Mt 24: 9-14)

.

Many Christians are brutally persecuted in various Middle East and African nations. China, home of more than 1 billion people, is officially atheist. The official Catholic Church in China is essentially an underground movement. Many reports of brutal persecution of Christians all over the world are reported.

The Emergence of the Antichrist

The fourth sign according to Our Lady is “the horrible sacrilege perpetuated by him who sets himself against Christ, that is, the Antichrist.” The Bible prophesies the coming of a cunning and powerful global leader who, shortly before Christ’s Second Coming, will rule and deceive many nations. 2 Thes 4:9 speaks of the Antichrist as follows:

This one will oppose and exalt himself against everything that men adore and call God. The lawless one will come by the power of Satan, with all the force of false miracles and pretended wonders. He will make use of every kind of wicked deception, in order to work harm.

The Bible predicts a future time when the “perpetual sacrifice”, that is, the Holy Mass, will be abolished. We find this in the prophecies of prophet Daniel, one of the “end time” prophets of the Bible:

Go, Daniel; these words are to remain secret and sealed until the end time. Many will be cleansed, made white and upright, but the wicked will persist in doing wrong...Now, from the moment that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the horrible abomination is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he who waits with patience and attains one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days. (Daniel 12, 9-12)

Our Lady explains to Fr. Gobbi that the above prophecy of the abolishment of the “daily sacrifice” consists of the future abolition of the Holy Mass by the Antichrist:

By accepting the protestant doctrine, people will hold that the Mass is not a sacrifice but only a sacred meal, that is to say, a remembrance of that which Jesus did at his last supper. And thus, the celebration of the Holy Mass will be suppressed. In this abolition of the daily sacrifice consists the horrible sacrilege accomplished by the Antichrist, which will last about three and a half years, namely, one thousand two hundred and ninety days.

This event obviously hasn’t happened yet - but when it does, then we can be certain that the events leading to the Second Coming are reaching its pinnacle.

The fifth sign is “extraordinary phenomena, which occur in the skies.” Jesus describes what will happen shortly before His Second Coming as follows:

The sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light; and the stars will fall from the sky; and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven. All the tribes of the earth will mourn, and men will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven, with great power and splendor. (Matthew 24:30)

The “sign of the Son of Man” that will appear in heaven, as described in the Gospel, may be the sign of the Cross that will appear in the sky. In her diary, St. Faustina revealed this message given to her by Jesus:

Before the day of justice arrives, there will be given to people a sign in the heavens of this sort: All light in the heavens will be extinguished, and there will be great darkness over the whole earth. Then the sign of the cross will be seen in the sky, and from the openings where the hands and the feet of the Savior were nailed will come forth great lights which will light up the earth for a period of time. This will take place shortly before the last day.

When will it happen?

When will all this take place? No one knows, except the Father. But as Our Lady has said in her December 31, 1992 message to Fr. Gobbi, we have to be vigilant and carefully observe the signs of our times. We can confidently say that three out of the five signs mentioned above - apostasy, war, persecution of Christians - have already occurred.

When the last two signs emerge - the full manifestation of the Antichrist and his subsequent abolition of the Holy Mass, plus the “signs in the sky” prophesied - then we will know with much confidence that indeed, the Second Coming is near.

Is the End of the World to be Feared?

For many, any talk on the “end of the world” is a cause for much fear. However, a careful study of the various reliable private revelations on the end times will show that the end times is actually not something to be feared. Instead, it is a message of hope. God will restore order in the world, Jesus will come into the world and rightfully claim His place as king. For those who believe and accept Him, the Second Coming will be a glorious moment when we will all finally claim our rightful heritage of eternal joy.

The “end of the world” should be interpreted as the “end of the world as we know it.” It is not really the end - but rather, the end of Satan’s reign on earth. The Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph, Satan will be defeated - and we will all live with our families in the “new heavens and new earth” promised by the Lord to His faithful followers.

In her August 15, 1991 message to Fr. Gobbi, Our Lady describes this new era of peace and joy that coincides with the “end of times”:

The new era coincides with the complete fulfillment of the divine will...From the perfect fulfillment of the divine will, the whole world is becoming renewed, because God finds there, as it were, His new garden of Eden, where He can dwell in loving companionship with his creatures...The new era, which I am preparing for you, coincides with the defeat of Satan and of his universal reign. All his power is destroyed.

Our Response

How do we respond to all this? The answer is to continue living our normal lives, but with a difference: greater prayers, and an attitude of vigilant waiting. We continue living the way we are supposed to live as Christians: to live each day as if it were our last. To love our family and our neighbors as if it were our last. And finally, to pray as if it were our last. The weapons that are given to us are the same: Holy Mass, the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, frequent Confession. If we do this, then the end of the world will not be a time of distress for us, but a time of great rejoicing and happiness.

Hi - Greg Rolla here.

Good article, but again, the ball is still out of the park concerning Medjugorje. The Vatican is supposed to issue somesort of declaration about it in November. We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, Conchita and the other visionaries of Garabandal gave explicit information on what is coming. We are coming to the point of the "end times" but not yet the end times themselves:

- FOUR (three) popes after Pope John XXIII "and then it will be the "end of time" (Dec. 20th, 1962 - the Blessed Virgin to the visionaries). [Pope Paul VI,(Pope John Paul I), Pope John Paul II, Pope BenedictXVI] Conchita said that the Virgin told her that one of those popes would have a very short reign, and that another of the popes would be called "Great."

- The Warning and Miracle "will open up the end of time" according to Conchita.

- A special synod of bishops to take place which will signal "the end of time" according to Conchita.

- Concerning the persecution: "The Holy Father will go to Moscow. When he returns, there will be conflicts all over and the tribulation will get worse." Conchita said that this will also be something that will open up the "end of time".

Jacinta, I believe, talked about a "special coming of Christ in a spiritual way" which is not the same as the Second Coming, but will have a similar effect upon the world. This will be preceded by the Warning and Miracle. And we know that Mari Loli saw a vision of the Sacred Heart prior to the appearance of the Blessed Mother to the children. Also, several saints throughout the ages talked about a "spiritual coming of Christ" to the world prior to the Second Coming.

In my opinion, we are very close to the events. They may actually occur in 2013, in 2017 (the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions), and perhaps 2019. The latest would be 2021. I point out these  dates for a number of reasons. Some believe that the Miracle may happen in April of 2013. A same date in April on a Thursday (in which the Miracle is to occur) also happens in 2019. 2017, again is not only the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions, it is also the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. This may be a strange link, but Our Lady at Garabandal also said that "the churches would unite." Perhaps this will be the impetus for such an event. We shall see.

I believe that we are already entering the "end time" period, but this will only happen after the Warning and Miracle. We are right at the cusp.

Hi Deacon John
I would have to agree with Greg. This article's enthusiasm and piety is admirable but at the cost of accuracy and I hold it to be on the margin's of Catholic acceptability.

Garabandal's message (and the phrase "end of times") has nothing to do with Jesus's Second Coming - which is in glory and signifies the end of the world.
I am a bit shocked that Garabandal has been so easily  lumped in by the Philipino author simply by that phrase and because of the "Chastisement" theme.

I would also challenge the author to demonstrate exactly where in the officially approved  Rwanda messages (many of the "see-ers" and messages were rejected as false) the immanent 2nd Coming of Jesus was announced.
I couldn't find it when I did some research.

As for Medjugorje - the "jury" is still out on that one though we hope for something definitive later this year from Rome. I am personally sceptical given the significant disobedience and disrespect for Rome associated with these see-ers and associates. (While Our Lady may well have appeared initially I think the see-ers have been led astray since). I would not call huge numbers of pilgrims good evidence of  "fruits".  That is plain silly. Popularity, by itself, has never been a guide to truth.

Despite the author's caveat that we should not fixate when Jesus's 2nd Coming will be (we should just live each day as if it is our last)  - he nevertheless panders to exactly that concern!

Why is it that every time I post an article that is interesting for us to read, it gets attacked and unbelievable? Besides we are not  here to judge Medjugorje or its fruits. We are here to discuss as friends Garabandal and its Fruits. I also don't like it when someone posts here and does not add their real name to the post. What are you hiding? In the future, as moderator of this group, I will delete any posts that are not signed by a real name.
Again, if someone does not like what I post here, please leave us and delete your name.

No Greg, your reply was on target but let's leave Medjugorje speculation out of our reply's and stick with Garabandal issues. If I post an article about Garabandal and it has something in it about Medjugorje, I cannot do anything about that unless I edit it out and then we lose the thrust of the article. Besides, I always try to remember Acts 5:38:   "let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown: 5:39but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them; lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God."  Good advise for us all!

Dear Deacon John
I was shocked by your post which seems to be about myself (Greg
thought it was him but if not him then it must be me).
I am sorry if I have been out of line in some way but I (and some
others below) really do not know what deserved such an angry reaction?
(It does seem way over the top to me).

Let's go thru your concerns one by one and maybe you can advise what
the problem is:

(a) "[article] gets attacked and unbelievable?"
John that last article is simply not correct when it implies that
Garabandal predicts the 2nd Coming of Jesus in Glory.
As a believer in Garabandal and a lover of truth I cannot standby and
allow new members, or members who have not done their research, to
falsely believe this is true when it is not.
May I kindly ask if you believe the Garabandal message is about the
Final 2nd Coming of Jesus in Glory? I think you will agree with me
that it is not.
I am therefore trying to protect the purity of Our lady's genuine
messages at Garabandal. Anything else will muddy the real message and
do her a dis-service.

You call this an attack - I call it a defence. Regardless of the words
why do you have a problem with this? It is not about you. it is
against Policarpio's poor understanding of Garabandal and the way he
is using it for his article's thesis. He can have any thesis he likes
- but he can expect a defence from me when he muddies/manipulate the
Garabandal message to support that.

(b) "Besides we are not here to judge Medjugorje or its fruits. We
are here to discuss as friends Garabandal and its Fruits."
Fair enough, yet I was doing little more than agreeing with Greg -
whom you seem to have no problem with. Can I ask if you have a strong
personal belief in Medjugorje yourself? If that is so then I regret
not couching my objective observations more diplomatically re your
sensitivities.
The point I was making was that Policarpio's basic assumption "Various
apparitions of Our Lady, as well as numerous private revelations...
Their common theme - that our present generation will witness the
Second Coming of Christ" is spurious, more Protestant than Catholic,
and a deep distortion of many of the private revelations he claims.
Also, to publicly put Medjugorje in the same basket as approved
private revelations such as Rwanda (and others officially approved) is
highly premature and unwarranted and confusing to newbies.

(c) "I also don't like it when someone posts here and does not add
their real name to the post. What are you hiding? "
John, I have no problem providing my real name. As I was a member of
Google before I joined this Group my username of BlueHorizon simply
got transferred to this group.
May I kindly observe that you cannot really require members use their
real name - you would likely contravene Google Group policy and risk
having your Group closed down.
I understand you find challenges to your own personal views difficult
but that does not mean people are agin you. It is a sign of health
when we can live with ambiguity and tolerate sincere people who do not
always agree with the way we do or see things. No single person gets
it all right.

Thankyou for your ear.
Father John Williams.

Glad to see you came out of the closet, Fr. John. Like I said before I'm just the messenger posting articles about Garabandal and even those that mention the apparitions, the Warning, the Miracle, and the great Sign. I'm not an expert on the Events, although I've been spreading the Message and story the best I could for over 40 years; and I always like it when someone mentions Garabandal in a positive way. I don't post negative reviews here because that's not what this group is all about. I started this group many years ago for believers like myself who could support each other with those around us who deny the events and think we are weird for believing in the Events of Garabandal. My views on Medjugorje are my own. If you wish, check out my blog http://deaconjohn1987.blogspot.com and you can see those views yourself. I don't discuss those apparitions here.

Greg Rolla here - I think everyone will absolutely be convinced that the end of the world is here and that the Last Judgment is taking place when the Warning is experienced. As I opinionated in my book, the Warning seems to be a prototype experience of what humanity will go through on the Last Day. This is quite extraordinary in itself and will be devastating for the multitudes who will either be caught off guard by it, or realize that it has been the Truth all along.

I have been reflecting on the deceptive simplicity of "I am just the messenger" wrt spreading the Garabandal message – let alone the Gospel. And surprisingly I have realized its actually extremely hard for any of us to practice.

When it comes to the message of Garabandal the person I see who outstandingly succeeds in this is Conchita herself - and she only does so through an active mindfulness, humility and self-discipline that takes my breath away.

If we look at her past interviews (whether reported or on TV (see youtube)) it is very interesting what happens when she is asked what Our Lady's message is! Have you noticed? She quotes verbatim what the Virgin told her back in 1965, word for word. Nothing more, nothing less. She doesn't try and interpret it or put it into her own words. And further, if it is an English interview she will revert back to Portugese (or was it Spanish) because that is the language  the Virgin used when she communicated the message to her. And further still, she does not even rely on her (fading?) memory. She pulls out a piece of paper on which she has copied out the very words from her original diary of the time. This is great humility.

Source documents show that all manner of colorful, wealthy, eccentric, weird and wonderful persons have in the past attempted to "railroad See-ers (whether of Fatima, Lourdes, Garabandal and especially LaSalette)  and their message for their own political or personal agenda's, or deep neediness or self-aggrandisement. It is also clear that a huge part of Conchita's cross has been to endure the same - while all the time trying to communicate the original simplicity and accuracy of the message given her. From the evidence to date it seems she has so far succeeeded marvellously in this regard though at the cost of hiding her identity to those she lives with (even her Parish Priest in the US is/was unaware of who she is).

Even us “spiritual” people are not immune. We do like to speculate and try to “connect the dots” between the many alleged apparitions/prophecies/events/signs etc even when the clarity is not really there. We like to extrapolate to further possible conclusions and dates. Yet deep down we know that if God wanted us to know these things they would have been spoken more plainly already. WRT the Second Coming...we all know that Jesus expressly stated no-one is to know when (that appears to cover visionaries and saints) ...suggesting that the seeking or the wondering excessively thereof appears to have been anticipated and frowned upon by the Lord and so may not be helpful for salvation).  No doubt we would be much better off if we put our speculative concerns and excessive need for more spiritual insight (apparantly there is a vice called "spiritual greed")  into actually doing what the Garabandal message asks of us: Lead good lives, make many sacrifices, perform much penance, visit the Blessed Sacrament frequently, pray and forgive sincerely.

I support!
