Franklin High School in Southeast Portland stands out among our comprehensive high schools for its success in getting students to graduate on time and last year had the highest rates of graduation for Latino and Black students in the district, almost double the district average for those groups and significantly higher than the state. At Franklin, a student's race has been effectively erased as a predictor of whether they will graduate on time. This is particularly significant given that Franklin was used as the model for the ideal comprehensive high school program in our new system with a balance of supportive and challenging opportunities for students.
Lane Middle School in Southeast Portland saw a 32 percent increase in writing scores overall, with African-American and Latino students out-performing the total student population. Lane, with a significant population of students in poverty, has consistently been an example of a middle school that is effectively preparing students for high school.
