Sunday, March 8th at the Forum

Presenter:  Classmember Reverend Chris Cooper, retired United Methodist Church Elder who served 42 years and 13 different appointments in Arkansas

Topic:  Chris continues our Book Study of Justice:  What's the Right Thing to Do? by Michael Sandel with Chapter 5:  What Matters is the Motive, Immanuel Kant, pp. 103-139.

This chapter covers Kant's formulation of morality without reference to consequences; he argues that we are rational beings worthy of dignity and respect. Kant links freedom to rational autonomy, and morality to rational considerations alone. Again Sandel uses cases to test Kant's moral philosophy.

Read an outline of the entire course of study in the attached Word document.

Visit www.justiceharvard.org/justicecourse to see short videos of Michael Sandel teaching the course on which this book is based.  You will find that there are three videos pertinent to this week's program:  "Lecture 11 "Mind Your Motive"Lecture 12 "The Supreme Principle of Morality";  and Lecture 13 "A Lesson in Lying"

At the beginning of lecture 12, Sandel says to his students,  "By the way, this is the week by the end of which all of  you will basically get Kant.  You will figure out what's he's up to."  Sandel looks out into the audience and says, "You're laughing!  No!  No!  It will happen."

We hope you will join us for lively discussions of important issues as, in this season of Lent, we seek to discern what IS the right thing to do.

Everyone is welcome!  Room 222 if the Education wing, the building adjacent to the Sanctuary.
