Next meeting is Saturday April 10th, Selby Gardens at 10 AM
Topics & Activities

  • Care and Feeding of Bamboos - Addressing & Preventing Damage From Cold
  • Introduction and Demonstration of Propagation Techniques - An Overview and A Review of Online Resources For Learning More
  • Select Bamboos for Sale to Benefit the Society
  • Q & A for General Bamboo Questions

Care and Feeding
Cold damage incurred by this unusually cold and long winter has been substantial to some bamboos and some locations. We'll discuss options for getting plants back on track, and ways to avoid or minimize damage in the future.

Propagation
While no 'trade secrets' will be revealed at this propagation introduction and demonstration, a review of techniques used for clumping and running bamboo propagation will be covered. Perhaps you want to make the most out of your investments or just want to attempt to propagate. We'll also discuss resources online for those interested in taking propagation to the next step. We will also discuss the difficulties in propagation and those in tissue culture. The potential impact of tissue culture on the price and demand of bamboo should not be ignored. It's also an exciting opportunity for better penetration of bamboo into the average household.

A Few Bamboos Will Be Sold to Benefit the Society

There will be time for questions and answers as well as a group discussion if time permits.

Meetings are free and open to the public, but PLEASE RSVP via email so we can plan for how refreshments (Coffee, Tea, Snacks).

Please spread the word and bring a friend.

Thank you!

I understand and can relate to such sentiments but we must remain politically correct and interpret such hoarding as proprietary intellectual information one is not willing to share without predefined ompensation.

Not my style nor the way most of us roll but to each his own.

I do not make laws or even influence them it seems. However in my
tiny planet, the smallness of minds who seek to own the power to
create life (and Dr Frankenstein, YOU KNOW TO WHOM I REFER!) are not
my favourite people. and I hope you will not reject my personal
advice about how to grow things, which is always something I am eager
to share. I also have no need to become politically correct. It just
does not work for me.

Never has.

I mean why bother to get together and talk if you are not going to be
disseminating hints and tips about how to grow stuff? To PRIDE
yourself on your secrets? that's ICKY!

John,

The purpose of saying what we said about propagation was to clarify that this meeting wasn't a "how to start your own nursery, with all secrets revealed."   Some folks expect to find some trick to help them grow bamboo and start their own business.  What's clear is that not one things works when propagating, and that's the message we send.  We also try to make sure people are realistic about their expectations.

We in fact share considerable amounts of information with each other in our group and it's why we meet.  So I hope this clarifies things. :)

Doug,

I thank you and individuals like you who do make the effort to band together for like kind interest when it comes to germplasm preservation.

I have been growing Boo for the last 25  years, I got a late start, with some earnest. We are still trying to figure it out. Every operation and environment is quite different. The environment in South Florida changes with the weather. Lots of blind luck involved trying to predict the weather. Most of the “trade secrets”  I have implemented have not worked 50% of the time.

The purpose was not to try and interpret what you said from what you meant but to engage in banter with Hermine. She has been around since onelist and I have reflected on and/or appreciated her musings.

Sorry if I offended,

Thanks for what you do.

Best,

jd

Thank you John.  No offense taken.  I sincerely appreciate your reply.

If I have learned anything about growing bamboo, I should probably directly attribute it to Adam Turtle who said to me "listen to the plant, it will tell you much of what you need to know about its needs."

I have a long way to go, but I sure do appreciate the plant and the people who seem to deeply appreciate it. :)

Take care,

-doug
