I recently saw a great slideshow by an inspired and inspiring
commercial photographer named Chase Jarvis (http://
www.chasejarvis.com). I thought the pace and use of tempo made for a
great presentation. Using the same concept, I spent a couple of hours
creating my own version of it by pulling about 1400 random images from
my fire photo archives. They represent a mish-mosh of incidents I've
covered over the past few years including some noteable events like
the Metrolink derailment (the first one), the Universal Studios
backlot fire, the Triangle Complex wildfire, some LA County FD swift
water rescue training and others.

The slideshow moves swiftly and is set to a song by Ghostland
Observatory called "Midnight Voyage". Please check out their music,
available on iTunes.

This wasn't intended to win any awards or even be made public, I just
thought you guys might appreciate it.

Oh, and turn up the volume!

Thanks Ryan.

Actually I used a simple slideshow program included with Roxio Easy
Media Creator. I started by importing all of the image files I wanted
to include then added the song. I added the black screens and text
using the same program and told it to time the photo transitions to
fit the length of the song. Although that took a lot of tweaking
because of the longer text panels, it came out pretty well. I also
removed images one at a time in order to have them stay in synch with
the music. I would have liked to include some Ken Burns-style zooms
on images I wanted to highlight, but the program lacked user control
in that regard. I also tried to use iPhoto on the Mac to create the
slideshow but I couldn't transition the images fast enough to keep
them up with the tempo of the song. After all was said and done, it's
a quick 5 minutes and I'm finding that certain images seem stick in
the viewers' minds anyway, even without the zooms.

There is a cool program called soundsslides, you can try the demo version free! We use that at school for the photojournalism class, and I know the San Jose Mecurey News used it, and a bunch of other papers. You can do cool zooms, photo transitions, its a real neat program!

Thanks for the info Danny. I'll check it out.

Oh, and I also reduced the file sizes of the images so they'd load and
transition quickly.

No prob!

I am pretty sure soundslides resizes the images to.

Well... a bit too fast for my taste, actually got a bit dizzy trying
to stay focused on the images.

Ive done a number of multi media shows, have a deadline of Jan 17 for
my annual CRFD one, and typically used a 4-6 second per image time
frame (with some rare exceptions for something different)... obviously
I like the concept of multimedia shows, but for my taste, slow down
please!

Another easy way is to use Windows Movie Maker.  It will let you use background music, add kyrons and you can control the length of how long the picture is displayed.  It also has all kinds of effects you can use.  The nice thing is that it is a program that you already have on your computer for free if you use windows.  Mac has something similar called I-Movie.

Thanks all, I'll take a look at the programs you've suggested.

Tim, I guess I should've warned you to take your Dramamine before
watching the slideshow! haha

I showed this to my wife and she had the same opinion. I must be
biased because I am familiar with the images and where they were
taken, so I didn't have a problem focusing on it. Then again, my ADD
helps me in this area. I think maybe slowing it down to 1 image per
second as opposed to two images per second might be easier to view
from the "untrained" eye. I like the photos that were shown in
succession (swift water training). Kind of like a stop motion movie.
Made it easier to see.

I just downloaded a demo of the Boinx Fotomagico software found
here: http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/screencast/. I think this is an
outstanding photo presentation program that offers all the transition
effects and audio editing that you need to create a great presentation.
Check it out.

Great concept though. Keep up the good work.

Very cool Craig! I went to Chase Jarvis' website to see his Chase
Jarvis Frames and I have one suggestion. I really like the stop motion
sequenced images. It would have been nice if you paused on some of
your favorites (or best) images occasionally to allow us to soak in
the image. Thats just my idea (and then I noticed CJ also did this).
Good Work, I wish I had that many incidents to go shoot!

Joel,

As I said in an earlier post, I was hoping to do just that but the
program I was using wouldn't execute the effect to my satisfaction.
I'll keep looking though and check out some of the suggestions given
above. It's just something I wanted to throw together to get my
creative juices flowing. I'll likely take my time and put together
something of higher quality in the near future. Thanks all!
