Our Flickr Group page allows for discussions just like this Google
page. I do think, however, that the Flickr discussion feature is
cleaner and makes for one less website for us all to log on to. I
also think it helps to have member photos and discussions in one
place. It's still free to use and it might give us all an excuse to
post images on the Flickr Group since we'll be there anyway! You just
need a free Flickr account.

Please reply and let me (everyone) know what you think about this.
I'm totally open to suggestions.

Craig

BTW There are currently two discussions awaiting your participation in
the Flickr Group! http://www.flickr.com/groups/fireground/

One more thing... I've been watching the Flickr Group closely and it
seems that several of it's members (including me) are getting some
attention from worldwide viewers. Flickr seems to be a useful
platform to get your images noticed and many members of our group have
had images noticed and shared (with permission) on other groups. Many
have grabbed the attention of publishers and other notables on the web
as a result of posting images in the group. Let's use this exposure
to our advantage, individually and as a group. Think about it.

Hi, first time poster, long time reader! I have a question about using
Flickr. How safe are the images you post there from theft/unauthorized
use? I don't have a problem with merging the discussion group to one
place, I am just worried about my images being used by someone else.

Welcome Kevin!

This was certainly a great concern for me when I first looked at
Flickr and is also the reason it took me so long to join. After
monitoring the popularity and power of "free exposure" Flickr seems to
offer, I chose to begin posting. I do, however, recommend anyone
submitting images watermark them, as I have mine. It only offers
minimal protection for the "right clickers" out there but I have seen
not only myself, but other members here, get global recognition and
attention from images they've posted. Although Fireground Action
Photography assumes no liability in the event any members' images are
used in an unapproved manner (have to say that) I personally believe
the potential rewards outweigh the risks. That's my personal
opinion. If you're still uncomfortable posting your best images on
Flickr, you can still create an account and join the FAP Group without
putting your best stuff up. In the event we do combine the discussion
group with the Flickr Group, there shouldn't be a need for everyone to
participate in both if you chose not to. It's completely up to you.

Kevin,

I normally post low res photos that will not print well. The best
defense is to place your watermark in the middle of the photo so it
can be seen. Most people place a watermark semi translucent in the
middle of the photo.

I have no real opinion on where the discussion is hosted. I spend more
time on flickr posting photos so it might be a little easier for me to
discuss there but not all that much.

I think Flickr might be good for some of us and Joel has a good idea for protecting your  pictures. I say do it and give it a try.

As I mentioned, I suggest watermarking your images anytime they're on
the web. I personally don't like viewing images with watermarks
across the middle of the frame. If the point it to share your
photography with others, then why smear a watermark across the middle
of it. It takes away from the viewing experience. I feel a more
subtle watermark in one of the corners is more appropriate for a
photography portfolio. I absolutely agree with posting low res images
on the web though. All of mine are low res so if someone wants to
steal it, they won't be able to do much with it. Also, consider
registering any and all images you release on the internet with the US
Copyright Office. If they are used, you have standing to punish the
perp and seek punitive damages.

My vote is to move to flick. One less website to go to the better!

I vote yes, seeing as no one has responded to my thread yet on the
flickr group, with more people on there hopefully someone will do
something similiar to what I posted
