ORIGINALLY POSTED BY CAPTSCOTT:

I am hoping to begin the long process of scanning and archiving all
my
photos and negs next month and am looking for suggestions on what
scanner to
buy.

Don't want the most expensive nor the least expensive. Just a good
combo
unit and as compact as possible that does both photos and negatives.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I've been using the Canon Canoscan 8800f. It's a flatbed scanner and
does great scans of prints, but it also has lighting elements in the
lid to allow for scans of negatives, slides (35mm AND medium format!)
I've had great luck with it and I think it was only a couple hundred
bucks at Samys. Believe it or not, I sold my $1800 Nikon neg scanner
because this one performed so well.

That's interesting as that was the first model I looked at. Then I
went to
Samy's and they suggested the Epson models, one that was over $500.
They
have a cheaper one but I wanted to get some opinions before I made a
choice.

Hmm good info here! I'm not thrilled with my scanner's performance.
Maybe some day...

Check out http://www.scancafe.com/

At $0.24 per scan, it's almost better to have the negatives
professionally scanned (with no dust I might add). Dust is a killer
with negative scanning.

Enjoy.
