how do I disable automatic page updates?

I have installed Firefox 4 on my Windows 7 PC. When attempting to
access the internet using Firefox I find the
screens in vertical order with text only. No longer have graphics.
There is a post along with the strange
screen saying I need to disable automatic page updates.
How do I do this? Should I disable for a single session or should I
disable permanently?
