I know it only happens if i launch Firefox after i closed it out
improperly (like just shutting down without closing Firefox).

Is there any way to disable this? I have "open home page" selected in
the start up options, but this doesn't seem to help if i killed Firefox
improperly.

Anyone have a clue?

Type in the url bar: about:config and press the Enter key.
That opens a page with preferences.
The browser.sessionstore.enabled pref is not there by default, so you
have to create it.
Right click on the page to open the context menu and choose: New >
Boolean.
Name: browser.sessionstore.enabled
Value: false
