Simmons School of Library and Information Science is actively recruiting students for the Fall 2020 semester. Emphasizing scholarship, teaching and service, the Simmons LIS doctoral program enables students to work closely with faculty to tailor the program to their scholarly interests and career goals. Doctoral studies can be conducted at various intersections of setting, audience, and activity. Some examples of study areas which build on strengths among SLIS faculty include but are not limited to: Archives, Digital Archives, and Preservation Management, Information literacy and Information Services, Information Organization and Metadata, Information Behavior, Usability and User Experience Research, Social Justice, Diversity in LIS Profession, and Social and Community Informatics.
Simmons doctoral graduates have gone on to teaching and leadership positions at a variety of academic institutions such as Catholic University of America, University of South Florida, Syracuse University Libraries, University of Baghdad, Hunt Library at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Fletcher School at Tufts University, Wayne State University, University of Alberta, Kuwait University, Library of Congress, University of Southern California, and Emory University.
The course of study includes a combination of required and elective courses, independent study, workshops, and guided experiences. During the program, students are able to investigate a variety of dissertation topics within library and information science, as well as within information professions.
The SLIS PhD program offers tuition coverage for coursework to top full-time students every year and encourages part-time students working in areas that complement their doctoral research. During the program, students may be offered paid teaching assistant or research assistant positions.
In Fall 2020, one Doctoral Fellowship for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will be awarded to a full-time student. This fellowship will include tuition coverage and a paid research assistantship.
