Long time no post. I've been busy with the Christmas activities of the
UPSLIS (School of Library and Information Studies). For the SLIS
alumni in this list, I would just like to share an update with you.
Seems there were other traditions added to UP Christmas activities
other than the lantern making and the belen since I was away.
Since last year, tents (booths) for concessionaires and academic units
ringed the academic oval. As an academic unit you can put anything in
the booth (as long it is non-selling, otherwise you'll have to fork
over a percentage). The SLIS booth won last year with Linux tutorials
and demos, this year we placed second with the laptop reading room
concept (pic:

laptop was the centerpiece and anyone can enter the screen from behind
and have their picture taken as if they were the laptop's wallpaper.
Recycled materials were used. (sample pic here:

This year's lantern was a giant book with the UP and centennial logos
on the pages and a giant Doraemon coming out of the pages. Doraemon is
an anime character, the cat without ears (he lost them in a fight with
another cat). He's also the cat with a bottomless pouch pocket where
he could get any thing / tool / material which could solve any
problem. We reasoned that anyone can achieve something like that with
their mind. Anyone can pluck information from their brain as long as
they read and study. And they could do that in the library. (photo

To further promote the lantern and rather than just walk beside it
during the whole parade, the 26K Dancing Librarians was formed.
Borrowing from Deal or No deal, they carried books instead of
briefcases as they danced to the TV show's theme (nakakapagod daw,
pero sulit naman, I admire their energy). The books, when opened,
spelled out "University of the Philippines". We must have made an
impression since the group was mentioned in Rina Jimenez-David's "At
Large" opinion column in today's Philippine Daily Inquirer (online at
the PDI web:
http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view_article.php?article_id=108131.
The college name was wrong, though.)
The UPSLIS also joined the annual Carolfest for the first time. The
Carolfest started last year and the SLIS had a strong participation
and following. This gave rise to a new group, the UP Singing
Librarians. Their trademark intro and the audience reaction they got
is priceless. (online at Noel Feria's Armorer's Multiply:

My first Christmas back at the UPSLIS was tiring, but all the trouble
and fatigue was well worth it. It was fun, and, like I told the guys
and gals, it was memorable. (I'm still recovering from the flu,
though. Hindi ko na kayang makipagsabayan sa mga college peeps.
Nahamugan lang sa booth e trinangkaso na ako. O_o;;)
Merry Christmas!
