Bananas which can feed only so many monkeys (a finite resource); bananas which cannot be converted into wood for fuel (a non-convertible resource); bananas which are good only if they haven't spoiled (a resource which is perishable or degradable, unlike precious metals); bananas which you cannot usually exchange, at least in Africa, for olive oil (a resource which is not fungible); bananas which will never earn rent (a resource which cannot be reused, unlike property or equipment, and which is not expendable, since it degrades through time not use); bananas which can only be used once (a non-recyclable resource); bananas which will never bear interest (a resource which is not an investment). Evaluating a monkey's worth on the number of bananas the monkey possesses is simian mathematics, since bananas don't add up to the true worth of a monkey to its community because monkeys are less renewable than bananas; monkeys are less perishable or degradable than bananas; monkeys can be "recycled" or used more than once; and monkeys can "bear interest" or reproduce, even raise other monkeys. Moreover, while bananas can be transferred to other monkeys, a monkey's particular abilities or skills cannot be transferred. How can something instantly worth even less than a banana — fiat money unbacked by any physical commodity; fiat money which is an investment only for those who have a banking licence; fiat money whose value can fall significantly with a government's failure, or a country's economic failure — sum up the true worth of a human being?
