José Manuel Coelho has asked, and been granted political asylum in the Principality of Pontinha, a micronation which is just off the coast of the port of Funchal, capital of the Madeira Islands, an autonomous region of Portugal. This is still a developing story, so the politician, a former candidate for the Presidency of Portugal in the 2011 election, may be trying to find a way out of jail even through other novel, and never tried before avenues. The Madeiran Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) deputy, accused of defamation for calling the attorney, and former leader of the maoist Portuguese Workers' Communist Party/Reorganized Movement of the Party of the Proletariat (António) Garcia Pereira a "CIA agent", was sentenced to one year in prison for the crime of "aggravated defamation".
