Even though it's got a couple of clunkers on it, Ween's 1997 concept
album 'The Mollusk'
is just a great record... and it was really reminding me of 'Sgt.
Peppers' when I was listening to it today.

It's got the same thematic flow (but with a few obscenities) and
variety of material, but it's also recorded on an eight track reel to
reel, while the Beatles record was done on a four track (but one a
step above the cassette version in my studio). The production is
obviously better on the album recorded at Abbey Road with George Martin
producting, but the Ween manages to pull off some orchestral art
rocking themselves. I threw on Pepper afterwards, and I am again
struck by how mediocre about half of the songs on this lauded album
are.

Now, about half of the songs are really, really good, and there's
nothing on Mollusk to compare with "A Day In The Life" just as a song,
let alone a hugely influential recording.
But I listen to all the songs on the Ween album and I skip half on the
Beatles one.

I also hate the Yankees, but they haven't recorded anything worth
listening to in 40 years or more.
