SERC Minutes of October 5, 2010

Attending:

Russell Barber
Margaret Johns
Carol Littlejohn
Carla Lyle
David Smoak (Town Administrator)
Valerie Millsapps (Assistant to Town Aministrator)

1. Roll call (Johns). 8:30 AM.
2. Approval of September minutes.
3. Call for any additions to the agenda:
Elizabeth Clemmens and Shannon Warden have resigned from the
committee. Two volunteers are needed for the committee. Lyle will send
emaiils to principals for any recommendations.

Johns reported that Google documents will no longer post group
documents, beginning in November 2010. Littlejohn is looking into
KeepAndShare.com site to post the committee's files and documents by
November. Smoak, Villsapps, and Palmer stated that all information on
committee is preserved on town's server, but some members desire
website for public documents.

4. Review of Old Business
School statistics. Johns requested data from principals and will post
informations from Deakins, Karnes, Wellons, and Craze on the Google
group website. Jennifer Evans, in corporation with KCS and Pilot, says
that group is now loading a software program that will provide useful
statistics. Currently, KCS spends $6,700-$7,000 per student with no
breakdown between schools (Deakins). Some vital schol statistics from
school administrators:

# of participants in free & reduced lunch programs: HVA has highest
number, but this population is low in other schools (Deakins); FHS has
highest need among FPS, FI S, &FMS (Wellons).

# of students to this year. FHS received 140-150 transfers from NCLB
(Deakins); 981 students enrolled at FPS, an increase of 30 students
(Craze). Due to overcrowding, administrators are considering building
a SW elementary school (Deakins).

Most efficient academic area: literacy (Craze).

Johns recommended a meeting with administrators at next meeting to
collect further information on federal expenditures, NCLB track record
in Farragut, and the school's Report Card.

School needs for 2010-11. FPS bought rubber mulch, 42 laptop
computers, ActiveBoards, and will need to add more mulch in the
future. FPS is at capacity in classrooms, but cafeteria and gymnasium
is overcrowded (Craze). Due to overcrowding, administrators are
considering adding a SW elementary school (K-5).

Supply Our Schools update: Barber contacted local scoutmaster for an
Eagle Scout candidate to volunteer services; one Eagle Scout
particpant may be interested. Lyle could not contact Guy DeMarco for
FHS volunteers & suggests using students as volutneer.

5. New Business:
FHS Foundation. Jerry Martin was contacted and provided information:
FHSF needs volunteers for database and at this time an endowment plan
has not been established. Marketing consists of contacting FHS parents
(espeically during annual Phone-a-thon on October 19th and 21st) and
sponsoring a Chamber breakfast in February. Smoak reported that the
Farragut Business Allience dontated $1,200 to the schools; committee
is considering donating money to FHSF. Johns will contact Martin and
is encouraging all members to attend the FHSF meeting at the FHS on
November 19th at 6:30 PM or on December 14th at 6:30 PM. Smoak will
contact David Purvis of the Farragut Business Alliences for additional
support.

HVA Foundation. Johns contacted Sallee Reynolds (Principal), but has
not received an answer at this time.

Expect More/Achive More. Local initiative for Race to the Top, a
federally-funded program. Tennessee received $500,000,000 with
Knoxville Chamber as participant. Johns will contact local media to
publicize the program.

6. Adjournment at 10:30 AM.
NOTE: The next meeting is still be determined as to the date. Other
information will be posted.
