The difference being that his sniping at me was sustained and he never
really does anything but attack people with short posts anyway. We
just took a different perspective on it because he was usually doing
it to the other side. I have admitted, for what it's worth, that I am
guilty of a double-standard myself for treating trog with kid gloves
and defending him for so long.

I ignored it until I didn't. If someone, unprovoked, came out of the
blue with "fuck you" and "you're like checkers", etc. over and over
again to you or Multi, I highly doubt you wouldn't have eventually
said something back that wasn't so nice. The simple fact is that every
regular poster has retaliated for less than what trog has said to me,
so I don't think anyone can blame me for responding back without
holding different standards to me than they do to themselves.
> He probably just needs a break.
The reason he's blowing his top so badly is that he can't sustain an
argument for why he's the good guy in this. He wanted to play the
victim after quite a long period of time in which he was randomly
trolling me and I was being civil to him, and when I pushed back and
made him look dumb he quickly figured out that the facts wouldn't
support his pathetic martyr complex, which so closely resembles that
of the other trolls who do nothing but troll and then whine when
legitimate posters fire back.

Of course, and I understand. Of course, trog has made similar
statements that infer he just wants to cause trouble. The problem is
that we're all guilty of making posts that do nothing but fuck with
the other posters. The difference is that we do it in response to the
trolls, giving them their own medicine while being more clever and
intelligent about it and beating them at their own game for fun, while
posting substance the rest of the time, whereas the trolls never post
substance and engage in that kind of behavior exclusively. Whenever a
good poster responds to e_space, they're usually just doing a version
of the same thing and engaging in a flame war. So it seems to me we
determine trolls based not so much on what they do but what they don't
do: attempt to participate in substantial discussions. This creates a
problem with evaluating what qualifies as substantial discussion, with
the danger of us having an atheist bias. For example, if e_space
writes ten short, illiterate flame posts and one posts that touches on
Pascal's Wager, and trog posts ten similar flame posts and one post
that touches on how the Bible contradicts itself, atheists are likely
to say e_space is a troll and trog is not because in that eleventh
post trog is right and agrees with us and e_space doesn't. But the
difference is an atheism vs. Christianity difference, you know what I
mean? It's not something we're going to reach a consensus on.

Yeah, TC and Stoney create another problem: we'd wind up keeping some
obvious trolls just because we enjoy them more.

Of course. So I wouldn't worry about it so much. Trolls do seem to
crave sympathy to an extent, which is why they want to play the
victims. They know that's the only way they can do it because they
understand that nobody is going to like them for their posts. You are
right that ignoring them usually doesn't work. But occasionally, when
they can't give themselves banned, they pull a trog/MacNevins. It's
funny that, as much as I defend the free speech rights of trolls,
having me in a moderation position seems to work as a natural troll
repellent.
