Keep weedkiller out of Britain’s bread
Sign our petition today: Join us in saying no to glyphosate in our bread

At the Soil Association our vision is for a world where everyone has access to healthy food they can trust, and we passionately believe there’s no place for chemicals in our food.
So we were horrified when we found out that use of the world’s most widely used weedkiller glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) on British cereal crops had increased over 400% in the last 20 years, and that according to Government data this rise in use is matched by a rise in the amount of glyphosate found in sampled bread.
|
Tests by the Defra committee on Pesticide Residues in Food (PRiF) have found that as much as 30% of UK bread contained this weedkiller. UK wheat will also be used for lots of other foods including biscuits. A recent European study on city dwellers found that in the UK, 7 out of 10 people had traces of this weedkiller in their urine.
|
Farmers spray the weedkiller pre-harvest, in order to kill and dry the crop and reduce weeds for easier harvesting. But, The International Agency for Research on Cancer - part of the World Health Organisation - has recently identified glyphosate as a probable carcinogen. At our recent scientific briefing in Westminster, Professor Christopher Portier, one of the co-authors of the report said: "Glyphosate is definitely genotoxic. There is no doubt in my mind."
|
So why is it still being sprayed on our wheat? We’re calling for a UK ban on the use of glyphosate sprayed on UK wheat as a pre-harvest weedkiller and its use to kill the crop to ripen it faster. But we need to make our voice heard amongst our bread manufacturers and retailers too.

We are asking everyone who believes that food should be chemical free to SIGN OUR PETITION asking them to keep weedkiller out of Britain’s bread. It’s very unlikely the use of glyphosate will reduce because of regulatory change by the Government, it really is going to be down to the public putting pressure on the bread companies and retailers.

Please sign our petition today at soilassociation.org/notinourbread and then share it with your friends, families and colleagues, and encourage them to also make a stand against these hidden chemicals in our food. This will be an ongoing campaign - our first aim is to remove glyphosate from our food chain, then we can lobby to stop its use in parks, playing fields, schools and other public spaces. We also want restrictions on its sale through wholesalers and retailers, the UK is way behind other countries such as Denmark, France, Sweden, Sri Lanka and El Salvador.
