to FLEx - teaching
Hi all,

There's now a Google Site associated with the "FLEx - teaching" Google
Group, at https://sites.google.com/site/flexteaching. The Google Group
will continue to be available for discussion purposes, but files and
pages will now be supported by the Google Site rather than by the
Google Group.

The new site is currently empty. If I've got the settings right, all
of you who are members of the Google Group also have access to the
site, so you can freely add content and read or download things that
others have posted. At some point soon, I hope to re-post at the new
site all the pages and files that were collected at the Google Group.

Hi Ron - I see you listed as a member of the Google Group as ron...@sil.org, and as far as I can tell, all your settings there are normal. You're getting into the Google Group but not the new Google Site, right? Not sure how to troubleshoot this. Have any others of you tried this?

When I try to open the page I get a message saying that I have "insufficient privileges."

Ok, I'm trying to duplicate the problem. Rand, your "jrva...@wisc.edu" email address is listed as a member of the FLEx teaching group, so I would have expected the FLEx teaching site to also let you in.

I just tried signing in with a new email address. If you have another email address that you sometimes use with Google, then something like this might be what's happening to you. Here's what happened in my case -
  • I created a new Google account with an email address that's new to the FLEx-teaching group
  • I signed in to Google Groups with this new account
  • I went to the FLEx-teaching Group
  • It let me view things even though it didn't recognize me as a member, but over on the right side of the screen was an "Apply for group membership" link
  • I clicked the link to go the FLEx-teaching Site and got an "Insufficient privileges" message, including a link to "request access to this site"
At this point the best course of action is to go back to the FLEx-teaching Group and apply for membership there. Once you're properly enrolled there, you'll also have access to the FLEx-teaching site. So -
  • Go back to the Google Group and apply for membership there, by clicking the link "Apply for group membership" on the right side of the screen
  • After you've applied for membership, I'll get a notice about this and approve your request
  • The next time you sign in to the Google Group, you'll be recognized as a member, the "Apply for group membership" link will be gone, and now when you click on the link to the FLEx-teaching Site, you should get in with no error message.
Or an alternative solution would be to change your Google account to use the email address "jrva...@wisc.edu". Then everything should just work without need to wait for the re-approval process.
