Dear FCFM GoogleGroup Friends: In response to Pastor Kelm's prompting, I would like to introduce myself as well. I regret that I have been so busy that I have not been involved in the googlegroup lately, but hopefully that will settle down a bit in the coming weeks. I am an Ordained Minister and an Ordained Chaplain, with a calling to Chaplaincy (which is not easy in Salt Lake City, which is heavily LDS dominated). My ministry specialty, if you will, is acute traumatic stress and crisis management. I am currently finishing a course in Pastoral Crisis Counseling, and I am also finishing 3 or 4 months of training and orientation specific to a large health system here in the SLC area (I should know within the next week or two if we can reach agreement) so, Lord willing, I will be able to volunteer a few days each week in their Pastoral and Spiritual Care Department. It is more complex than you would think because you must learn the "religious" and "spiritual" aspects of ALL of the worlds religions from Birth through Death, and how to provide spiritual comfort to individuals with no religious belief system whatsoever. This has been time consuming for months, as well as challenging. I must admit that there are activities I am willing to participate in, and there are those which as a devout evangelical and fundamentalist Christian that I am not willing to participate it; it is this set of issues we have been negotiating and discussing to see if we can reach an agreement. As such, I have had no free time since well before December.
Currently I am down flat on my back (literally) because I have thrown the muscles of my back out (could use some prayer with this one, as my wife and I were just talking about whether or not I should go to the hospital; this type of problem can take weeks to get over and right now I am having trouble moving). I had to call Medicare and Social Security today over a billing problem, which is always a tense issue to face because they typically ask for a reaudit of all of my medical records, which at 60 years of age is a challenge. You would think it would be easy for a medically retried administrator.
We live in Salt Lake City, where the weather is bi-polar 12 months out of the year. It is a very frustrating place to live due to the Mormon influence and the weather extremes (of the 2 million people stretching from 50 miles north of SLC to 50 miles south of SLC, about 1.6 are Mormon, and their religious beliefs impact every aspect of life -- for everyone).
Aside from Chaplaincy ministry to those who hurt spiritually, physically and emotionally, my passion is trying to wake up the sleeping and lukewarm Christian Church and try to help them to understand the days in which we are living. You may find my callings web site of interest, and for those who have not visited in a while I have added new information, selected music, and and entirely new page (page 9). www.tapestrycommunityministries.org if you are a mature Christian who is active in your Church or a ministry, lay or professional, and you would be willing to be a "Prayer Partner" for a Chaplain here in Salt Lake City, let me know. The idea behind "Tapestry" is that we are all weaving the threads through our own individual lives. In the end I would imagine the fabric will be quite beautiful.
I would also like for you to know that it is an honor to count Pastor James, Kim, and Kitty Mandy, as friends. They are solid as a rock and are rooted in planted in their love and devotion for our Lord Jesus Christ (Yeshua). Blessings, always, Christopher (and Tracey, and Kitty Amanda, and Kitty Andrew)
Rev/Chaplain Christopher P. Brown, MHS, CATSM
